JonBenet Ramsey

(photo: JonBenet's grave.) Back in the late 90s I met a gentleman by the name of Lance Matthews who told me a fascinating story about time he served in a Colorado jail, and his cellmate, J.T. Colfax, a performance artist who made off with a page from the morgue containing information relating to the JonBenet Ramsey Murder Case. I was doing a cutting-edge overnight talk radio show at the time, which was streamed over the Net. We also conducted IRC chats and accepted faxes and phone calls from listeners all over the world!

As a reporter interested in the case, meeting Lance was like having manna fall from heaven. Over the course of several months Lance was able to contact and invite most of the key players and investigators of the case to be guests on my program. Lance was the greatest radio talk show producer who ever lived, IMHO! But, the series eventually ended, and, in that end, there was only speculation, with just a sliver of hope.

Fast Forward 10 years: It wasn't the Ramseys, as many of you believed! Today the JonBenet Ramsey case comes full circle, with the arrest of (guess who) a sex pervert who had fled to Thailand! (Can you imagine the grief of losing your child and being falsely accused of murder?)
A man arrested in Thailand is being held in connection with the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey, law enforcement officials said today.

John Karr, 41, a former Atlanta, Ga., resident, was arrested today in Bangkok, according to two people familiar with the investigation who spoke on the condition they not be identified.

The connection to the Ramsey family was not immediately clear. Karr's resume lists Regents College here in Albany, New York.

Federal officials familiar with the case, who spoke with the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said the suspect was being held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges.

Six-year-old Jon Benet Ramsey was found beaten and strangled to death, in the basement of her Colorado home, the day after Christmas, 1996.

  1. I didn't go overboard reading all the available info on this case, but I do recall there were no footprints in the snow around the Ramsey house after the crime was discovered. Since the parents didn't find Karr in their home, how did he arrive and depart? Am I wrong on this or does memory serve me correctly?

WAIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO COMMENT?
Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

I NEED TO BE HEARD! BUT I DONT WANT TO PAY.
Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
