Sum-Sum-Summertime

Tags: ,

With the Albany High School Battlegrounds closed for the summer, Albany Police will likely be quite busy with street violence in Arbor Hill and the South End and outside Sneaky Pete's. Judging by the amount of shootings so far this month, it should be a hot time in the old town. Good thing Mayor Jenning's gun control proposal was shot down, otherwise he would lose plenty of face, as the young criminals will have their illegal guns no matter what. But is Albany ready for the newest threat? Word on the street is that Albany, Colonie and Guilderland are in the sites of Sex Offenders, who will be leaving Schenectady. (Don't worry guys, still plenty of hookers there: we're talking sex perverts and child molesters, a whole 'nother genre). From the Albany Times Union:

  1. SENATOR SALAND ANNOUNCES PASSAGE OF HIS BILL TO REQUIRE CRIMINAL DEFENDANTS INDICTED FOR SEX CRIMES TO BE TESTED FOR HIV

Bill would allow victims to learn about health risks in a timely fashion

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced his bill
(S.3740A) to authorize a court to order a defendant to submit to HIV testing upon indictment on certain sex offenses has passed the Senate.

“As the law stands now, the perpetrator of a sex crime can only be required to be tested for HIV upon conviction and convictions can sometimes happen years after the crime took place,” said Senator Saland. “Victims need to know as quickly as possible if there is a possibility they have been exposed to a serious disease so they can be proactive to protect their health”, Saland added.

Any risk of prejudice or inconvenience to the defendant is greatly outweighed by the victim's urgent need for information necessary to obtain appropriate medical care. Moreover, this bill is necessary to obtain the full amount of Federal Grants to Encourage Arrest Policies (GTEAP). The failure to enact a law authorizing the HIV testing of certain defendants following indictment will result in a loss of 5% of GTEAP funds.

The bill has been sent to the Assembly where it is expected to pass before the legislative session ends.

  3. UAlbany Rape Suspects In Court8:36 AM, June 13, 2007

Two of the UAlbany football players facing charges in connection with a rape on campus, will appear before an Albany County judge this morning. There's word that Julius Harris, and Lorenzo Ashbourne could accept a plea deal.
It all stems from an incident last October, when the victim claims she was forced to have sex with the men in a dorm room. Police say she had too much to drink, and was unable to consent to it. Three men are charged in this case, all of them are suspended from school, pending the outcome of this case.

WAIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO COMMENT?
Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

I NEED TO BE HEARD! BUT I DONT WANT TO PAY.
Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
