Thief in the Night

Tags: Kelsey Smith,

It's always sad to hear this kind of news. Even worse, we're all too familiar with this scenario, and surveillance cameras, electronic vultures are waiting, perched on buildings and light poles, recording everything with unblinking, uncaring eyes. A dear departed friend, John Colagrande, once warned me "Dave, the world is crawling with cuckoos. They can't stop them all. People just have to be careful."

(KANSAS CITY, Kansas) - CNN reports that police in Kansas have discovered the body of missing teen Kelsey Smith from Overland Park, Kansas. They were directed to the area of her body by using cell phone signals, in an area just over the Missouri border.

The discovery was made just outside of Kansas City in an area where two nature trails come together.

The 18-year old has been missing since Saturday, June 2nd. She was last seen leaving the Target store just south of Oak Park Mall at 7:00 PM.

Smith, a recent Shawnee Mission West High School graduate, was expected to drive directly home from the Target store but never made it. She bought a present for her boyfriend and then was observed on a videotape being abducted and forced into her own car.

Police have released a video of a young man who they are calling a person of interest.

The man, who is approximately 6 feet tall and about 25 years old, was seen leaving the store shortly before Smith.

Her car - a 1987 two-door Buick Regal - was found June 2nd in the parking lot of Macy’s at Oak Park Mall.

If you are a prayerful person, you may want to remember Kelsey Smith, her parents and her friends. When you do, all of your own problems and frustrations seem small and meaningless.

WAIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO COMMENT?
Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

I NEED TO BE HEARD! BUT I DONT WANT TO PAY.
Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
