Twitter Is Out

Tags: ,

Twitter has been removed from the sidebar. I was hoping to use it as a replacement for the now defunct "Sideblog." (If anybody has suggestions, or knows of something better, please leave info in the "comments." ) I first installed the Flash version of Twitter, but found it didn't display properly in some browsers on certain operating systems. Next I installed the Java version. Now Java usually works quite well with Blogspot blogs, but I had a lot of trouble tweaking Twitter. Finally, late last night, I got it to the point where I thought it was working well... not quite. Display problems in versions of IE, especially on WinME and Opera browsers. It also stopped some browsers dead in their tracks, i.e., the full page couldn't load or would only load after several hits of the "refresh" arrows. One thing I've learned in my X number of years blogging: anything that drags your page during loading means X number of readers you've lost... forever! Remember, not everyone has a brand new computer, not everyone is on DSL, cable or satellite!

I like Twitter: maybe someone has found a way to get it to load quickly?

  1. That's the problem with widgets, they do not work with all browsers and just slows down your load up.

I personally don't use Twitter, but what I found great was Facebook. You can update your activity like Twitter and they have a fantastic widget you can put on your blog that works better.

  2. 我这里速度倒不慢,照理来说应该我比你们慢才对。

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
