Technically Baked

Tags: ,

Blogging from just outside NYC this morning... Heard a joke on the radio that went something like "yeah, the guy who designed the new Easy-Bake is the same guy who programs the same 300 songs you hear over and over again on oldies radio." What's he talking about? So we turned on WCBS-TV and there it was: a massive recall of Easy Bake ovens. WTF?

Seems that after almost 50 years, some genius decided to redesign the child's toy and get rid of the old light bulb powered baking system (O hail technology!) and replace it with a HEATING ELEMENT while at the same time changing the oven design. What ever happened to "if it ain't broke don't fix it?" [Details]

Seems the genius came up with some sort of tray that must be used when putting stuff in and taking it out of the oven. D'oh! Anybody with a quarter of a brain knows that huiman nature dictates we skip such a step! BTW the old-school Easy Bake ovens are safe as kittens! The big recall only includes the "high tech" version!

  1. Oh, so that is what happened to my neighbors hamster.

  2. I refused to buy one of thise things for my daughter just as my mother refused to buy one for us. She taught us to bake in a real oven when we were about 9 ir 10 -- the age where if I were so inclined, I would think this item where this would be appropriate. It sounds like they made it more hazardous!

I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.
