ALL ACCESS reports that veteran programmer "UNCLE" FRED HORTON (former PD - WTRY & WGNA in the Capital Region) passed away early this morning (3/4) in ERIE, PA. HORTON most recently worked at WXTA/WRIE and has worked at such great places as WYNY/NEW YORK, WBEE/ROCHESTER, WGKX/MEMPHIS and WSEN/SYRACUSE.
One Halloween night, I was working in the WTRY newsroom, Richie Norris was the jock on duty spinning the oldies. I brought in an old Brunswick 45 "Who Dat?" by the Commodores, and we borrowed a copy of "Rhiannon" by Fleetwood Mac from PYX-106, which was upstairs. The plan was to play them at Midnight. We got away with airing "Who Dat?" but Uncle Fred, who was home but had gotten up to visit the bathroom, tuned in WTRY on his "toilet paper dispenser AM radio" and heard "Rhiannon." He wasn't all that mad, and let it go. He was a good guy.
HORTON's family has set up a memorial fund to help cover the medical expenses. Those willing to give may make checks payable to ELAINE HORTON for the benefit of FREDERICK C. HORTON the third and mail to: ELAINE HORTON, 436 Park Ave. 2W, SYRACUSE, NY 13204.
