His Holiness The Dalai Lama is coming to Albany!

Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings makes the announcement.

Thanks to rampant negative publicity, the Dalai Lama's April 18 to 22 appearances (with events set for the University at Albany, The College of Saint Rose and the Times Union Center) were to have been the inaugural events of the World Ethical Foundations Consortium: the WEFC has released the following statement: "Understandably, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was concerned that his message would not get through in the current environment and has postponed his trip to Albany. We look forward to welcoming His Holiness in the future so that the Albany community can benefit from his wisdom and leadership." Those who ordered by phone can call 1-800-30-EVENT for their refund. Online credit card purchases will be automatically refunded.
On Tuesday I attended a news conference in Albany where Mayor Jerry Jennings announced that the Dalai Lama will be here next month for an appearance at the Times union Center. The event made possible via the World Ethical Foundation, co-founded by Sara and Clare Bronfman (the daughters of billionaire Edgar Bronfman Sr., of the Seagrams fortune). I was able to speak with Sara after the event. She and her sis are very committed to bringing the Buddhist monk here to the Capital Region.

Now this is not without controversy, as writes
"CultNews has been reporting for some time about a “human potential” large group awareness training (LGAT) company called NXIVM (pronounced Nexium) also known as “Executive Success Programs” (ESP) located in Albany, New York."
cultnews goes on to say
"The Albany Times-Union also reported that there “will be entertainment” at the Dalai Lama event, “but the details have not been announced.” Rumors are rife within the Albany area that the Dave Matthews Band will supposedly be that entertainment. However, there is nothing noted on the band’s tour calender. They currently have no scheduled performance on the 19th and will be in Virginia on the 17th and 18th and then performing in Alabama on the 20th."
Bottom line: the Dalai Lama is no lightweight. His visit to Albany is akin to the Pope stopping by. Let's hope it does foster peaceful blessings and good will for all!

  1. This thing ain't a done deal. The event doesn't show up on the DL's calendar, either and, if His Holiness values his respected position, he will probably reconsider his engagement.

  2. The Sunday Gazette will be publishing an article I wrote on why the Dalai Lama should cancel his visit to Albany. It will appear in Sunday's paper, March 29.

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
