I forget what they used to call it here in the states, but nowadays its "GlobeTrekker." I just finished watching an episode on one of the Channel 17's. My favorite guides are Justine, Ian and Estelle. I once interviewed Justine Shapiro for my old "Capital Region People" radio show. That was back around 2003 or 4? I think she's still working for pilot guides, because they aired a GlobeTrekker with an older Justine a month or more ago...

I also interviewed Mishal Hussain, the BBC news presenter. Now if you wanna go back a little bit farther to the late 1990s, I was priviliged to host a wonderful weekend overnight talk radio show that I called "Dave Lucas WorldWide." [Links still work and some exist in this blog's sidebar...] In retrospect, the program was cutting edge for its time. WROW, the radio station it aired on, was actually streaming on the internet!

(Top)Lance Matthews rocks the (talkshow) mic, circa 1999...(bottom) Lisa Flowers spent many a long night moderating the chatroom (The radio show was broadcast 11pm-4am Fri & Sat nites!)

We had people calling in from Texas, Alaska, Europe! It was new, experimental, and so I made friends with a tech at RoadRunner, which enabled me to troubleshoot the system and make sure it was running during my show (it ALWAYS otherwise seemed to be "down"!)--- At one point I and my producer Lance Matthews were running a chatroom AND instant messaging on AIM all during the broadcast! I have a few of the shows on tape, and listening back, they SOUND like they could have been recorded last week! (Except I don't hear ANY radio talk shows utilizing the power of the internet as much as Lance and I did "back in the day!")

While we're doing the memory thing: Anybody out there remember Gopher, FTP, IRC Chat, Archie and Veronica?

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
