Around The Blogosphere 17 July 09

A fellow blogger jokingly calls Monica Tang "The Norse XiaXue." It seems Monica, like Wendy, likes pink --- but then, a lot of girls like that colour --- don't they? A lot of girls blog as well, few with the particular "punch" associated with XiaXue et al!

Africans are buzzing about President Barack Obama's recent visit. Kasja Hallberg Adu says it's all good!

It's all bad in Iran, where protesters chanted "down with the dictator" after Friday Prayer in Tehran. Watch...

Jadi sent out a tweet that “TV is showing a 5 sec view of Friday Prayers. Many people are wearing a glowish blue shirts! ... a video trick to convert green to blue.” (Iranian opposition uses green colour and was present at Friday Prayer.)

WHO IS:: Joe Connor? His name / URL is listed on MyBlogLog as one of the top sites being clicked on by MBL members. Also high on the list: Kim Noler and Tara DeGiusto. I wonder if there's a way of auto-clicking links on MBL? I can't imagine the MBL community at large flocking to these particular URLs.

In an item shared on Google by Geoffrey Philp, ProBlogger Darren Rowse offers 9 First Step Goals For New Bloggers - the only one that is really difficult (impossible for some) to reach is hitting "a level of 20 RSS subscribers.: Only those "pro blogger" types give two s***s about RSS nowadays.

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
