Readers have noticed that I've been engaged in a good deal of "blogging on the run." After giving it a little thought, I realize that mobile blogging is perhaps THE crucial component of the so-called "Lifestreaming" movement. While some people think Posterous is so much "all that" - I don't - I've run into several glitches and mis-posts with Posterous. Trouble is, the mis-posts end up making ME look like an idiot. Scenario: I put up a post in the morning on Posterous, thinking everything was fine. In the evening upon returning home from work, I find the post was incomplete, and because I set Posterous up to auto-post on my LiveJournal blog, I look stupid in two places at once! Sure, it could be edited, but now it's HOURS old (that's a lifetime on the Net) and I have to log into BOTH Posterous AND LJ to fix the problem!Mobile blogging is uber-easy if you are a blogspot user. I have
1 - via SMS - blogger allows tweet-like messages - they show up on this blog without a "title bar" - but they can be great for LIVEBLOGGING where one wants to drive traffic to his or her main blog IMMEDIATELY instead of via twitter or friendfeed or facebook
2 - via cell phone enabled e-mail - which is what I've been using the most. I write my post on the spot when I'm in the mood and have the option of sending it to blogspot IMMEDIATELY - OR - I can "Save as Draft" and look at it later, make sure I really want to send it and append it if necessary.
3 - via Virgin Mobile's "Picture Mail" which is almost but not quite like #2 - VM allows me to select a photograph, type in title and text - and, get this: if I have RECORDED a sound file on my phone, ATTACH A SOUND FILE - and email it to my blog via VM ---- I haven't tried adding the sound file yet, but from a news reporter's point of view, this could be phenomenal in getting a story up on the blog quickly. Memo to self: eXperiment with this technique!
4 - via e-mail from one of those "email only" devices -or- from a computer where it would be too much of a hassle or too time-consuming to call up blogger, log in, and go through the normal editing and posting channels.
OBVIOUSLY with the mobile phone, it's already in my pocket or nearby. I pick it up, input whatever text, and hit send. DONE. It beats powering up a computer, waiting for it to load, establishing an internet connection, opening up a browser, typing in blogger.com, logging in, going to the dashboard, going to "add new post" etc. etc. etc.
