RIP Mary

Time waits for no one...

I didn't forget that Mary Travers of the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary passed away this week. Another celebrity death of 2009. There have been many! When you look at the old photos, album covers and films of PP&M, you realize Mary was a flower. Peter and Paul were Maynards in a suit. These folks knew what they were doing. They took the folk music / hootenanny craze of the late late 50's-early to mid 60's and rode it like a tiger. What you may not have known is how carefully PP&M PLANNED their move into show business. They practiced and honed their craft for nearly 8 months before "going public." These are the songs you must find and listen to, in their ORIGINAL versions (if I wasn't so busy today I'd do it for ya, as usual, but...)

* If I Had A Hammer and Lemon Tree - their earliest radio hits
* Puff The Magic Dragon - their "trademark" or "signature" song
* The Great Mandala - a coffee-house favourite
* I Dig Rock & Roll Music - PP&M salute the Mamas & The Papas, Donovan and The Beatles
* Leavin' On A Jet Plane - how amazing that their last single topped the charts - their only National #1 hit!

Mary Travers, dead at 72, Rest-In-Peace, and THANK-YOU!

PS: Locals - if you go to the bookstore in the basement of the Albany Public Library's main branch on Washington Avenue and look in the record bin, there are 2 PP&M vinyl 33's there, waiting for you... better hurry!

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
