Newspaper Oddities 11 October 09...

...perhaps STRANGE would be a better word...

Not that much in the way of news, but a few unusual articles appearing in today's Times Union and Schenectady Gazette newspapers.

BOTH carry the AP story about the mother of Columbine killer Dylan Klebold, who says she has been studying suicide in the decade since the 1999 high school massacre but had no idea her son was suicidal until she read his personal journals.

Then, there's the surreal story about "Secret" new-age guru guy James Arthur Ray and the Arizona Sweat Lodge deaths ::: Two people are dead, many fallen ill after attending a five-day "Spiritual Warrior" retreat given by California-based self-help author. Because Ray is a tweeter, the story has attracted the attention of Techcrunch:::James Arthur Ray, is also an avid Twitter user. And yes, during the night of the incident he was tweeting about it. Ray later deleted those tweets and all the tweets about the retreat. But, as Mark Maunder discovered, they’re still available in Twitter search. And a couple are pretty interesting...

Which brings us to our "quote of the day" from TC:::"If you delete a tweet, it’s not really gone, so be extra careful about what you say."

Strangest and most embarassing in our enlightened 21st Century times - the front page of the Times Union's "SHOPPING" section::: "They've got 'The Look'" presents 3 students - two black men and "a jewish woman" - now, that's NOT my observation. I was out a little while ago picking up a few items for later - at Stewart's two men were sitting in one of the booths, reading the papers. I overheard one fellow remark to the other "...my mother used to say, the blacks and the jews..." - that statement aroused my curiousity... I saw what they were reading and checked out my own copy when I arrived back home. WHAT WAS THE TIMES-UNION THINKING? After all we've learned about fairness and equality, this page is a shocker. Maybe not so much to you or I, but if two guys in Stewarts noticed it and discussed it, you can bet others are doing the same.

At the very least, showcasing 4 students versus 3, with gender equality. If I were editing or authoring that page, I'd have picked 2 guys and 2 girls. I'd have selected one white, one black, one Asian, one Latino. If that were the scenario, no reader would likely notice or be drawn to look at the ethnicity of any one subject's given name. (Of course, you could always toss in a 5th person, representing the gay community).

And one more oddly interesting article, again from AP, where President Obama reaffirms that he will end the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

WAIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO COMMENT?
Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

I NEED TO BE HEARD! BUT I DONT WANT TO PAY.
Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
