MediaWatch 18 November 09

A great band, criminally overlooked... Wish someone would upload the ORIGINAL music video!!! Pearl Harbor and the Explosions...

VIDEO may have been indicted in the killing of the radio star, but it is being praised for driving InterNet traffic to new heights: " From 2007 to 2012, "traffic will increase sixfold," Robert Pepper, a vice president of Cisco, told the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh." [:m:o:r:e:]

FACEBOOK wants YOU!!! New York Mag reports that Facebook doesn’t care whether you ‘Defriend’ or ‘Unfriend’ - but - why would you want to? Why make someone 'friend' only to delete them later on down the digital road?

Dr. Filomena and Profy reflect on what it means to be a blogger::: "...blogs are convenient places to vent, to share with others one’s experience and opinions, opinions, opinions. Have I mentioned opinions? They are as different as the people who write them. Without editors in place to censor or instil common sense and without owners to set goals to be achieved by their hired managers. Yes, it’s great. Hey, I play the game on occasion. It can be fun, yes. But are they media?" and "...many of the traditional news outlets venturing online with their own blogs have made blogs themselves look more professional (as they are written by professional journalists) but it does not change the image of a normal blogger..."

51% of young Russians (ages 16 - 24) consider the Internet a reliable source of information. This makes the Internet the second most trustworthy source after TV among the youth. This and other findings are available in a newly published report [RUS] by the Public Opinion Foundation.

UH-OH - AP source: NYC papers' circulation offices raided in a probe of possible union corruption.

From "corruption" to economic "interruption" ::: THE ECONOMY could still tank. We're not "out of the woods" yet, as President Obama admits too much debt could fuel a double-dip recession...

COMMENTING FEES
Per comment rate: $2
Payable by either clicking the BitCoin "tip me" button or the PayPal "donate" button in the sidebar.

WAIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO COMMENT?
Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

I NEED TO BE HEARD! BUT I DONT WANT TO PAY.
Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
