Farewell, Viralogy

I have one simple but hardfast rule for any widget or service on this blog: if it does anything to screw up my template or break frames, it's history.

I mercilessly dismissed blogupp today, thinking it was responsible for knocking out several other services: Google Friend Connect, Entrecard, BlogBang, Google Shared Items, plus the "Google Bar" that appears at the top of the page, Sorry, Blogupp! Turns out the offender, now also dismissed, was Viralogy. Now that it's gone, all is well.
Good News! Since removing the viralogy java code, my blog counters seem to have returned to normal, now more closely mirroring SiteMeter stats! Awesome!
Blogupp got tossed because that was the site that appeared at the bottom of my screen when the other widgets got corrupted. But then, once Blogupp was removed, the REAL troublemaker surfaced: "" and whatever javascript was associated with it - and as soon as it was removed, everything immediately returned to normal!

What happened? Was Viralogy hacked? I don't know and I really don't care! Hmmm... is it coincidental that when viralogy was added to my blog a few weeks back that the traffic stats from both ActiveMeter and Extreme Tracking suddenly fell off the cliff? (SiteMeter has continued to provide me with accurate documented visitor reports, assuring me that traffic has NOT fallen off!)

Oh and while Blogupp is a nice feature, it didn't really bring in more than one or two visitors a week, so, no great loss as far as this blog is concerned!

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
