Nice Kitty... Dead Kitty

Kitty-Kat Killer Cheyenne Cherry - Me-OW!

The line separating an animal abuser from someone capable of committing human abuse is much finer than most people care to consider. The ASPCA says a lot of these abuser-types want to have control over others. They will hurt an animal because they think this means they control the animal. Or they may hurt the animal to control another person. For example, a husband might hurt the family’s pet to show his wife what he could do to her if she doesn’t obey his commands. Someone else might make his dog kill other dogs because he or his friends think that makes him powerful.

Others simply enjoy pain and violence. Here in the Capital Region we have the horrific story of Daisy the beagle. In New York City we have the cat-cooker, Cheyenne Cherry, who also has a 2007 arrest on the books for smacking a girl in the head with jewelry, according to police.

We have another Capital Region tale of unspeakable animal cruelty: According to the Gazette, 26-year old Evan Smith of Lenox Rd., Schenectady, was charged Thursday by Schenectady police with one felony count of aggravated animal cruelty. The heartless Smith kicked a neighbor's cat. The cat had wandered into his yard while outside with its owner, who was planting in her own yard. The cat's name is Sidney. He ended up losing all his teeth and one claw. His owner took him in 8 years ago. he was a stray who, when he turned up on Patrice Jordan's back porch, had been shot with a dart.

As Yoko Ono once crooned "What a bastard the world is" - - - if there is an afterlife, souls like those of Smith & Cherry will hopefully surely be tortured through eternity.

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
