The Mud Puddles of Blogging

So you think you've got it all covered: your PR is okay, you got your widget-ducks in a row, alexa ranking is passable, but your advertising is sadly lacking. There's one little statistic that advertisers can avail themselves of, something YOU should look into as well.

What's the average length of time a visitor spends on your blog?

If you take note of stats provided by whatever metering service you use to track visitors (the services are free, EVERY BLOGGER should have and use them) you should find this information somewhere in your records:

Average Visit Length .......... 3:23

This means that the average length of time a visitor spends on my weblog is 3 minutes and 23 seconds. The norm is around 55 seconds! The trick to keeping visitors on your site is to write mesmerizing copy!
I have posted thousands of articles, but there are about FIVE in all that attract visitors who STAY on-site!

When you notice visitors hanging on a certain post: take action! Make sure you update the post with links to newer, similar articles that will delight and entice those readers to click through! Promote those already-popular posts by TWEETING the URLs!

WAIT! There's MORE ::: You can watch every move your visitors make via ‘Engagement Time™’, a technology employed by ClickTale analytics. Engagement Time™ values the time a user has spent interacting with a page, rather than just the amount of time a page has been left open. Sign Up HERE!

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
