Care To Leave a Comment?

Here’s a bit of trivia: Do you know that whenever you leave a comment on a post, you are guaranteed to receive at least 10 visits back to your site?
Okay, forget the “guaranteed” part or better yet, disregard the first paragraph of this post. I just made that one up. I was hoping to submit this article to Dave Lucas in time for the April Fools Day but apparently, I missed the submission date by a few days.
Seriously speaking, leaving comments in posts is one of the ways to spice up your blogging experience. Here are the reasons why:

  1. Commenting makes you an analytical reader. When you just read blog posts, you passively accept what is written in the article but when you write a comment about it, your mind becomes active as you analyze the topic and organize your thoughts.
  2. Whenever you leave a comment, you create a two-way communication – a sharing of ideas. It gives the writer a feedback as to what his readers feel or think. On the part of the blogger, it feels good to know that people are really reading your article.
  3. Your comment becomes your business card on the other bloggers’ blog. Whenever you write something that might awaken the interest of the author and his readers, there’s a high probability that they will check out your site to know what you write about or react on something that you’ve said.
  4. It’s better than leaving a message in the chat box, except when you really have nothing better to say than “hi” or “just dropping by.” The link and message that you leave on the chat box is good only while it’s still in the first page but the ones you leave in post comments are as permanent as the post itself.
  5. Commenting creates relationships. They say the blog community is a “community” and by commenting, you are taking steps to become an active part of that community. You make your presence felt in the blogosphere and build relationships along the way.
So, the next time you see an article that has really awaken your interest, try to leave a comment. Who knows, the trivia above may really be true.
Now, care to leave a comment?

  1. One thing that I try to do is to leave open ended questions as part of my blog posts to encourage people to add comments. It doesn't always work, but sometimes I find it helpful.

    Anyway, I think the example of comments and emails between you and I have been a good example of how comments can help.

  2. Hello Sheryl... You said it! If everyone who visit your site will leave a comment then who will need those optimization programs.

    Likewise congrats to Dave for having Sheryl as Guest Post writer.

    More Power!:=)

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
