The 15 Commandments of Blogging

Ask yourself:

WHAT SETS YOUR BLOG APART FROM MILLIONS OF OTHERS?

Hold that thought.

Come up with anything good?

» MAKE YOUR BLOG UNIQUE!
Create an avatar. Coin a slogan. BE a BRAND! Blogging in 2010 demands spreading your "internet personality" around. The whole game is about WAITING for something you post to go viral. Make digital noise! Get whatever FREE PR you can for your work!

» KEEP THE MATERIAL FRESH ::: MOVE TOPICS FROM PERSONAL TO POLITICAL TO POP CULTURE AND BACK AGAIN!
Don't paint yourself into a corner by being a "niche" blog (unless you're planning to be THE expert in your field)! Once you develop a theme or thread, STAY ON MESSAGE - don't deviate! Have an agenda, and PUSH it!

» EDIT YOUR PRESENTATION FOR MAXIMUM EFFECT

» SAMPLE ALL AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY
Take advantage of your mobile phone! Enable blog posting, twittering and facebooking form your cellular. Interconnect them. You can NEVER have too much "presence".

» THERE'S ALWAYS ROOM AT THE TOP
Don't let the big bad "A-List" or "PR 7" blogs intimidate you! Calculate methods to compensate for any perceived shortcomings when comparing YOUR blog against THEIR blog!

(As much as I loathe the expression)
» THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
Look for plotlines as they evolve throughout your daily life. Try to view things from a different perspective than the one that you are comfortable with. Ask yourself a lot of "what if's" and then go forth and blog!

» DON'T BE A COPYCAT (or a "scraper" for that matter!) - don't steal ideas or plagiarize on a whim. Nothing takes the place of originality, except perhaps clever re-imagining.

The Internet is instant communication, so
» COMMUNICATE, already!
Ping that blog! Do a Google blogsearch and check Google Trends so you can get a snapshot of what the Net is buZZing about. If a recent post has anything to do with anything others are googling, comment about it on other blogs and leave the link to YOUR post on-topic as your "calling card"!

You'll inevitably come across bloggers you disagree with and bloggers who disagree with you.
» PICK YOUR BATTLES CAREFULLY (People THRIVE on conflict, whether they admit it or not!)
Go ahead and ruffle another blogger's feathers. Show them how much you don't need them!

» MAKE YOUR READERS FEEL WELCOME
Warm & Fuzzy time! Make them want to look at unique images and read uinque articles and digg and tweet and bookmark your blog!

» HAVE A DISASTER PLAN READY
Back up every service and widget with another like it. Blog*spotters download your blog's XML file on a regular basis. Others can use programs like HTTracker or simply save a text file of very post (formatted in HTML, which you can copy and paste as you are posting to your WordPress or TypePad or other blog platform) - Should your blog get hacked into or deleted, you won't be offline for very long. Especially if you have previously set up alternative blogs on other systems: I recommend Posterous and LiveJournal.

» STAY AWAY FROM THE "BLOG NUTSIES"
Forget the phoney "blog awards" and memes and "First Commenter Clubs" which identify you as a minor league C-List blogger!

» TYPE TYPE TYPE
Especially if you find yourself on a creative roll! A plethora of ready-to-post articles will see you through any episodes of writer's block. You can also pull up certain posts when something happens in news or the entertainment world that falls in line with what you've written. Your extra material will also fill in the gaps when you are on vacation or oterwise away from your computer...

» NEVER TELL READERS YOU WON'T BE POSTING - FOR ANY REASON!
Unless you're DEAD, and even then you can blog like Tupac if you've advance-scheduled your articles to auto-post!

» YOU ARE A WRITER, AN EDITOR, A "Re-INVENTOR"...
..who can pick and choose, resculpting ideas and reimagining others to fit your own bloggagenda!

Example of a "great read" ::: a blog I discovered accidentally, while Googling for something completely unrelated!

  5. It's also important to keep your readers in mind whenever you write a blog post. You can make it very SEO-friendly, but if it's something that your readers would not be interested about, they wouldn't still come.

COMMENTING CHARGES
Per comment rate: $2
Payable by either clicking the BitCoin "tip me" button or the PayPal "donate" button in the sidebar.

WAIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO COMMENT?
Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

I NEED TO BE HEARD! BUT I DONT WANT TO PAY.
Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
