Time Change Fall 2010 : Set Your Clock Back

Does anybody really know what time it is?

If you're running older versions of windows you got the "change to standard time" system change screen update this morning. [Here's how to FIX that!] But the time is NOT October 31st, the last Sunday in October. (Not in the U.S., anyway!) Some countries are switching to "winter time" but in North America, clocks roll back to standard time on NOVEMBER 7 at 0200 hours!

In addition, many fire departments across the nation encourage residents to change the batteries in their smoke detectors when they change their clocks.

What does Sunday mean to you?

Is it a day of rest or religion or hope or all three? Do you look back on last week or look ahead to this one?

Will you take a walk today or eat your favorite meal or call a loved one in a distant place?

Will you find happiness within yourself whatever your stage of life or walk of life?

The Cold

I woke up this morning with a sore throat and a slight ear ache. I could feel it coming on last night. I have many errands to run today and a pretty full schedule tomorrow, but I have the over-the-counter meds here at home just in case things get rough.

It's the end of October. Yesterday I turned another year older. Tomorrow is Halloween and then in a few days All Souls. Later in the month of November: Thanksgiving.

2010 is heading toward conclusion. Autumn is in the air. I've always loved this time of year.

You Can Never Go Home Anymore

" technologies such as synthetic biology and alterations to the human genome could also be explored ahead of the mission."

Imagine what it must have been like to have lived in the 1600's-1700's-1800's and very early 1900's, when people of many lands set sail for the "new world" of North and South America!

In the Daily Mail (UK) article The Hundred Year Starship: The Nasa mission that will take astronauts to Mars and leave them there forever, it is written: "They admit that the mission would come with ‘ethical considerations’ with the general public feeling that the Martian pioneers had been abandoned to their fate or sacrificed.

NASAofficials argue that these first inhabitants of Mars would be going in much the same spirit as the pioneers, the first white settlers of North America – travelling to a distant land, knowing that they will never return home." NEVER.

MySpace becomes Myspace ::: Might as well be No Space!

Have you heard *ho-hum* about MySpace re-inventing itself? That's like SONY announcing they've just re-invented the Betamax! What is the point of Myspace? Clearly, social networking has taken a backburner, as the homepage is littered with bands and movie clips. And it's not like the social aspects were ever any good. MySpace needs to accept their defeat and become a pure music/video provider! That's the ticket!

I haven't been on MySpace in months. I don't know, they may have suspended my account for inactivity...

I used to go on MySpace everyday as well as Facebook. But every since more people have gotten a Facebook, and there is nothing really to do on Myspace since no one really goes on that website anymore. I just really have no use for it anymore. After a while, it got boring. Although, I enjoy Facebook a whole lot more. I could spend hours on there everyday if I wanted to. I communicate with more people on there, such as old friends, family members who live very far away, and it’s great to have especially over the summer and you don’t get to see all of your friends, or the ones who have graduated already. ~ jackie

Last word ::: The new Myspace does away with its "place for friends" pedigree and instead aims to become a leading entertainment destination. ~ Pete Cashmore

Viral Video ::: Charlie Chaplin's "The Circus" Cell Phone Time Travel

Recently released footage from the 1928 premiere of Charlie Chaplin's "The Circus" appears to show a woman holding and speaking into a cellphone. While some believe the woman to be an "alien," this is the more likely scenario!

Is it possible that what we are actually looking at in the linked photos are "Time Travel Tourists"? Let's entertain the idea that time travel is possible. If you wanted to go back, observe 1920’s culture and not impact the time line this is how you’d do it, with a costume and a small communication device, suggesting that the individual may be communicating with other time tourists who ventured off as a small group. Of course, we are thinking here that one could not communicate through time so the device must have been used by the tourists to communicate with each other.

It reminds me of the recent modern-era hipster captured in a photo taken in 1941, which apparently is authentic, fostering hope that the time travel theory is real because it suggests human technology advancing for at least another century (or beyone) and perhaps that we had learned enough to not go back in order to change things or profit from manipulating history, altering the timeline. That would be true advancement!

The Lady Has A Badge

Praxedis is a tough little Mexican town, nestled just across the U.S. Border from Fort Hancock, Texas. It once was a quiet farming town until two rival drug gangs began battling for control of its single highway. [1] There weren't many takers when a job vacancy opened on the local police force. There weren't may officers on the force either: most had quit in fear, their numbers down to just three when Chief Valles Garcia took over.

She's a 20-year old student of Criminology, with an infant son. Marisol Valles Garcia is being hailed as "Mexico's bravest woman" for donning the police chief's hat in Juarez valley, a strip of about a dozen towns and villages where shadowy groups slaughter and mutilate police and civilians with impunity. [2] Valles Garcia landed the Praxedis gig because she offered a radically new police strategy: emphasize crime prevention and community development and let state and federal forces take on the cartels.

She intends to send out all-female patrols -- because women "tend to be more sensitive and less intimidating," she said -- backed up by two male officers at the station, along with one patrol vehicle, a rifle and a shotgun. The chief herself freely acknowledges that she doesn't know how to shoot a gun. [3] She has a "community policing" strategy : "We are simply going to talk with them, with the people, with the families, giving them confidence so they will quit being afraid, so they can leave their houses," she told CNN en Español.

Will her youth and femininity protect her? Or is she doomed to be a martyr, with her death being the rallying cry across Mexico to end the rule of the drug lords once and for all?

Where is Danny Trejo when you need him?

You're not as safe and secure as you might think, social networker!

A freelance web app developer recently showed how vulnerable secured login-protected social websites are. At the ToorCon security conference, the developer demonstrated a Firefox add-on dubbed Firesheep, that enables anybody to scan a Wi-Fi network and steal login details of Facebook, Twitter and several other services. This is an extremely dangerous extension that finds the security loophole in any website.

So How Was YOUR Weekend?

It was quite difficult to get a decent picture of the tiny "secret demon" carved in the stone near the Albany State Capitol building's "million dollar staircase." What you see here is what you get! I snapped it with my Kyocera Wild Card while on the "Haunted Tour," which I'll be filing a radio story on this week. I had to use photoediting software to bring the demon face out. Can you see it?

The most fascinating bit of information I picked up on the tour: US President Abraham Lincoln first crossed paths with the man who later be his assassin, John Wilkes Booth, right in Albany! (Booth was a popular actor, perhaps the "Brad Pitt" of his day)...
When the Civil War began on April 12, 1861, Booth was starring in Albany, New York. His outspoken admiration for the South's secession, publicly calling it "heroic", so enraged local citizens that they demanded his banning from the stage for making "treasonable statements". Albany's drama critics were kinder, however, giving him rave reviews. One called him a genius, praising his acting for "never fail[ing] to delight with his masterly impressions"
Following the tour, it was off to the hilltowns...

Don't tell the trans-fat police, but Indian Ladder Farms' Apple Cider Donuts are even better than I remember from childhood! They are so awesome! The next morning after a drive out to the orchard, I had a bagful leftover. Here's the secret: 22 seconds in the microwave. But just place 1 single donut in the microwave on a saucer. Like they just came out of the ILF oven!

By the time we got to Chinatown it was 9pm, but still plenty to do and see in NYC. Invited out to a jazz club then off to Queens for a few hours sleep before getting back to Canal Street to catch an early-Sunday ride back upstate.

One more Juan Williams Thought...

In the 30s Americans were scared of Hitler. By the mid-50s we were frightened by the Russians. After 911 Osama bin Laden was the designated bogeyman. I still have the vidotape from 911 where BBC was contacted by OBL, who said he wasn't involved. Don't believe that you must always live in fear. Live your life and trust in God.

This message is from a Virgin Mobile customer. Enjoy.

I Just Sit Here, Watching The Words Go By...

This essay, and any other on this blog written by Dave Lucas, may or may not prove to be correct, and does not necessarily reflect the views of any other person or entity.

Because my employer is an NPR affiliate, I've been getting inquiries from people regarding my thoughts on the "NPR situation," what's been going on with public radio and television. Personally, I believe that every side of every story should be told. In my professional reporting duties, I always seek out representatives from both sides of prominent issues. That's the way it is at my job. You won't find a more "fair and balanced" approach to news reporting and presentation.

At breakfast I was thinking about a lesson that for some reason has been being drilled into my head all week manifesting in both the personal and professuional areas of my life. That lesson in a word is "wait." Be patient and wait when an event happens ... you sit back and you assess the situation but don't take any action until later when everything has had a chance to "stew" and shake out.
NPR announced [Juan] Williams’ termination on Twitter (the social networking service). Williams, who is a Fox News contributor, had committed the deadly sin of expressing public concern about traveling with “people who are in Muslim garb … identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims.” Confessed Williams on “The O’Reilly Factor” Tuesday night: “I get worried. I get nervous.” ~ Michelle Malkin
Words are words and people say things.. some people can get away with "oh I misspoke" some people can't... and I don't always understand why and who is privvy to explaining it that way as they back out and who is not, and why some folk ultimately end up "crucified."

Both sides said some "odd" things. To which you might want to take with "two grains of salt" (to borrow a phrase from Andrew Cuomo). It's not always good to talk right off the top of your head. Notice how Bill and Hillary Clinton carefully size up any situation before commenting. I recall reading an old Mick Jagger interview, where the rock star confided to the reporter that he "carefully measured" what he would say in response to any question, so that even though there may be along pause in the conversation, Jagger had time to make sure that what came out of his mouth was what he wanted fans and others to hear.

Years ago when I hosted an evening radio talk show in the Albany metro area, I never took a position on a topic. Callers would ask :"what's your position on this or what's your stand on that," to which I would reply "I m not here to take a stand. I'm here to listen to what YOU have to say and help you analyze why you believe what you believe."

So whatever your belief is on whether NPR did the right thing or the wrong thing... I'm sitting here like the CBS eye. Uunblinking, just taking it all in... frame by frame by frame.
It isn’t simply Americans, but Canadians are really feeling the pinch when it comes to political correctness and censorship by the left of ideas they find inappropriate. I hope Williams understands that he has those who appreciate his incite and that most Canadians are outraged at the treatment he has received from NPR, especially at the slanderous comments from NPR CEO Vivian Schiller, after a decade of dedicated service.
Who was right and who was wrong? What's YOUR take on this? Comments are OPEN!

Attention Google! If it ain't broke, don't fix it. PLEASE!

Time for some VENTING!

Sometimes it seems like Google/Blog*spot wants to frustrate users! Up until the other day, if you were signed in to gmail, all you had to do is type "" into your address bar and you could update your blog.

Now, if you try that you get a slow-loading cumbersome screen that eventually has you sign in again! WTF!!!! Why can't they leave good things alone and stop screwing with users? I know, we shouldn't complain because it's a "free" service. But apparently they don't give a rats ass about users!

First that crappy lousy "new editor" and now this! WHY GOOGLE, WHY? Maybe it's all about money! Like those websites that display the message telling you you can't access the website because your browser is "too old." Then you have to go and install a new browser that you HATE.

One day when the corporate "big boys" are wondering "duh, what happened?" You and I will already know: they screwed up the great features and left us with BS! Doesn't it make more sense that if you are a success you'll want to stay that way? Why alienate users with "new features" they don't like and don't want? Things that end up being time wasters (or money wasters!) Google, do you care at all? Or do we have to wait for the day when another service comes along and remembers it's all about the customer????

One more oddity before I go ::: What is this person smoking? "The infectious song with a hip-hop, pop dance sound is comparable to Rihanna's music without the adult themes. "Whip My Hair" isn't sappy Disney pop that only appeals to tweens. It has already reached Number 17 on "Billboard"'s R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart."

Are you OK? THIS IS NUTS! The only reason the kid is a star is because of her famous parents. I'm thinking e.x.p.l.o.i.t.a.t.i.on. here!

PERHAPS THIS COMMENTER SAYS IT BEST ::: "she's like a little black lady gaga. She has a great voice, but that chorus is painfully annoying." Rihanna she ain't! (Although rumour has it the song was originally created for Rihanna, who turned it down).

Gas ::: Back OVER $3 a Gallon!

This is bad news for the recovery!

Just Dropped In...

Entrecard is holding a contest (DETAILS ARE HERE ... it's really easy!) Some members have a hard time reaching the daily drop quota. So here's a tip for all of you "dial-up droppers" ---

If you're on dial-up and avoid certain blogs because the load time is unbearable, use a friend's broadband computer or a public computer to "save entire webpage" onto a CD. There are two ways you can do this. If you care about content, save the main page of each blog, then burn them all to a single CD. If you are one of those netizens who like to "Hop and Drop," save just one page that you know contains a short post. When you call up the blogs from your CD, everything will load onto your browser (current widget data will likely be refreshed: keep an eye on your toolbar so you can track what's loading) and depending on the individual blog your load time will be cut anywhere between half and 90%!

I do realize (as do many entrecard members) that many of you specialize in the quick hello-goodbye hop and drop. But every now and then, when you have time, check out the great posts that many of the members upload! Happy DroPPing!

Will a new RSS Service Help This Humble Blog?

Eurovision Song Contest 2011 To Be Held in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf, Germany has been selected as the location for next year’s Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) for all three live events, the main contest on May 14, and the semi finals on May 10 and 12, as announced this week by NDR, the German television company in charge of the broadcast. Düsseldorf is now preparing for one of the world’s most watched non-sporting events with an anticipated 24,000 visitors and hundreds of millions of TV and online viewers for the live broadcast (160 Million in 2010).

ESC takes place each year in the country of the previous year’s winner. Germany won the contest this year with a song performed by Lena Meyer-Landrut, who will represent Germany again in 2011. Previous winners inlcude Lordi:

Four German cities, including Berlin, Hamburg, and Hannover, bid on hosting the 2011 event, and Düsseldorf had the best fit for the high requirements in staging the enormous event. The event venue, Düsseldorf’s ESPRIT Arena, will be reserved exclusively for a total of six weeks to accommodate ESC set-up and execution. Soccer games and other events scheduled for this time will move to alternate venues.

Plan to attend? Düsseldorf Tourism & Marketing GmbH is the visitors and convention bureau of the city of Düsseldorf. Its services include tourism and city marketing, conference and meeting marketing, hotel reservation services, fairs and convention services, city event ticket sales and advance ticket reservations.

Düsseldorf International Airport, Germany’s third largest, offers several non-stop flights from US & Canadian cities (Atlanta, Chicago, Ft. Myers, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Newark, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver), as well as convenient connections to many European cities and beyond.

ALSO: Registration is now open for the 2010 Singapore Educamp. “EduCamps are BarCamp style un-conferences where educators and people interested in education come and share their projects, ideas and findings.”
