Background ::: (KUALA LUMPUR) While many of her teenage friends are partying and having fun, 14-year-old Siti Maryam Mahmod has embraced her new role as a wife. "My husband is a teacher at a primary school and he is a family friend," Maryam said of 23-year-old Abdul Manan Othman. She said her parents grew fond of Manan and matchmade them. After getting the consent of the Syariah Court they tied the knot in July.
What bloggers are saying:
"You'd think paedophilia would not be legal in a country like that."
".... When a mainstream newspaper puts a front-page photo of a 14-year-old bride with no comment at all, then there is something seriously sick with OUR society."
"It is entirely sick that there are religious officials who view child marriage as the answer to “social problems”."
Nazri Abdul Aziz, a minister in the premier's department in charge of legal affairs, said the government has no plan to review laws allowing for underage marriages because the practice is permitted under Islam.
"A southern state's leader made headlines in August when he encouraged teen marriages as a way to prevent young girls from having sex out of wedlock and getting pregnant. Dozens of babies are abandoned by young unwed Muslim mothers in Malaysia each year."
