Crystal Returns For Old Time's Sake!

In 1993, when she was 14 years old, Crystal Mangum claimed to have been kidnapped by three men, driven to a house in Creedmoor, N.C., 15 miles away from Durham, and raped. According to reports, Mangum said she'd had sex with at least three men in the days leading up to the Duke lacrosse incident, including her boyfriend and two of the men who drove her to dancing gigs. Somewhere around this time, she again became pregnant.

She gave birth to a premature girl in January 2007. [Fox News] Broadcast journalists disagreed over whether to name the accuser, Crystal Gail Mangum. As soon as it was announced that charges had been dropped, Fox News disclosed Mangum's name and began showing a photo of her. Ain't I Pretty?

Fast Forward to 2/18/10:

Duke False Rape Accuser Charged With Attempted Murder - I never thought I’d ever write the name “Crystal Mangum” on this blog again. Back in March 2006, the then-prostitute and stripper accused three Duke University students of having their way with her... DALLAS PENN also blogs CRYSTAL

Authorities say former Duke Lacrosse accuser Crystal Mangum was arrested overnight Sunday for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend.

Around 3 a.m., officers responded to a stabbing at a home in the 3000 block of Century Oaks Drive.

When police arrived, they found a 47-year-old man stabbed in the chest.

A man who called 911 identified Mangum as the attacker.

"I told him she was trouble from the very beginning," said the caller.

The stabbing victim - who police have not identified - suffered serious injuries and was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment.

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.
