Get Your Puppy and/or Kitty Blessed!

Siena College hosts its annual Blessing of the Animals ceremony Saturday (10/1) at 1 p.m. in front of the Standish Library (rain or shine). It’ll run until about 1:30 p.m.

Siena students, their families and members of the Capital Region community are welcome to have their pets blessed by one of Siena College’s Franciscan Friars.

The blessing honors St. Francis of Assisi’s commitment to promoting peace and reconciliation among all God’s creatures. It celebrates people’s relationship with the environment, including animals of all shapes and sizes.

All animals are all welcome on campus for the blessing, which is one of the signature events of the College’s Family Weekend festivities.

On the flipside, Three generations of Bleecker NY residents have been accused of running a drug, gun and cockfighting operation on the family compound.

State police, Fulton County District Attorney Louise K. Sira, the Humane Society of the United States and other officials outlined the charges at a news conference at state police barracks in Glen this morning. The Leader-Herald has details, and I spoke with Patrick Kwan, the New York State Director for The Humane Society of the United States for a radio report.

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
