Are the 'Dark Angel' Days Upon Us?

Are those crafty mathematical Mayans on target?

Have we really let the internet screw us so badly?

We're all going to be helpless as newborn babies should the computers collapse?

It was only 30 or so years ago we didn't have everything all "wired" --- it was a great mistake not to leave all the old analog systems in place as back-up!

So, imagine your bank, or doctor's office, or even the local gas station following a pulse bomb attack. They (and you, and I) would be SOL.As Max says in the narration in Episode 1 of the Dark Angel television series, "the electromagnetic pulse turned all the one and zeros into plain old zeros..." An EMP attack would literally send thousands of small and mid-sized businesses in the United States into bankruptcy in less than a millisecond.

Are you a believer? You should pray. And plan intelligently.

The failure of the electrical grid due to an EMPis another potential danger to America. Not to mention all methods of communications (except maybe for the old hard-wired Bell telephone landline system, which has somehow managed to survive as an analog entity in this digital world.) As the end of time according to the Mayan draws ever closer, the world now seems to be waiting for SOMETHING bad to happen...

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
