Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (February 22, 1857 – January 1, 1894) - the man behind today's Google doodle - was a German physicist who clarified and expanded the electromagnetic theory of light that had been put forth by Maxwell. He was the first to conclusively prove the existence of electromagnetic waves by engineering instruments to transmit and receive radio pulses using experimental procedures that ruled out all other known wireless phenomena.
Hertz' work pioneered television, radio, and Wi-Fi – he would have turned 155 today. Without Hertz, there would not have been WOR. The New York City radio staple turns 90 today! WOR, along with WCBS, WFAN, WABC and Bloomberg Radio, represent the handful of Big Apple stations that can be heard all the way up here in Albany!
