The Collapse of America That Was

Diamond Gas
They say that blogging must be relevant, engaging and thought provoking. They don't tell you how FRUSTRATING it can be for the Blogger who has a genuine alarm to sound, and how the din of stupidity that prevails in the media serves to squelch the sound of that alarm... the sheeple only hear what Big Brother wants them to...

We're in big economic trouble. And still, no one gets it! No one understands that as long as the price of GASOLINE goes up, the quality of life and the value of the dollar goes down. What will it take to get the leaders to realize this?

On, Richard Levickretailers’ efforts to create a mobile payment system that would essentially transform cell phones into credit cards.

Reed Abelson at Economix (via Paul Krugman) points to a study on the effects of the Great Recession on health insurance.

Things are unstable all over... if you don't think so, check out A Political Shocker In China Has Implications for the Economy... Regardless of what "they" say regarding the price of gasoline or the likelihood of a "double dip" dose of inflation or the still-troubled housing market, SOMETHING is going to happen.

Look at the jobs and industries already in trouble - notably the US postal system - and look at how commerce and society have simply let the internet (and computers) take over. If the computer goes down, your doctor's office is CLOSED. If the computer goes down, your electric gird collapses. If the computer goes down, the bank cannot function. Nobody is backing up anything in old-fashioned analog! Men are at the mercy of these mind-machines!

It's been "in the air" since 2007: I smelled it coming then; I still smell it now; it is NOT here yet. When it gets here it will "clear the economic air" and create real opportunity for those smart enough or lucky enough to be in the right places at the right times. But that's just it. No one is sure where those reight places are or when those right times will appear. Just hang on and ride!

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
