Letter to a young blogger...

With print media outlets struggling and failing, new opportunities for storytelling are continuously emerging online.

Quality should not be expected to decline as journalism shifts from ink to internet.

Social media and microblogging sites continue to evolve, while the practice of blogging is becoming ever more complex. Mastery of the various components of blogging is now essential for anyone aspiring to advance as a blogger.

Blogging has become compelling and artistic. The clever cutting-edge blogger does not simply re-hash, re-write or share existing material - he or she re-channels and re-imagines it. Many bloggers go a step farther, posting original material exclusively in innovative and non-conventional fashion.

The activist potential of the internet can be harnessed to address a wide range of issues, from climate change to social change to the global monetary crisis.

Get out there and tell YOUR side of the story! Share your views! Be your own blogger - in other words - forget about all of those guru-advisor nuts who try to make you believe blogging is all about making money (it is to them - they're making money by taking YOUR money!)

Don't let anyone tell you that you or your blog are "not good enough," 'cos I know you damn sure are!

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
