Hiccups Can Be a Sign Of Something More Serious!

Hiccups are an annoying spasm that most people experience at least once in their life. Whether they inhale their food too fast, drink too quickly or are startled or surprised, most people have had the hiccups. Some people tend to get the hiccups more often or in long spurts.
If hiccups are common and lasting longer and longer periods of time, it could be a sign of a more serious problem. Although this is not common, hiccups can be the symptom of another disease.

Here are a few diseases where hiccups often show up as symptoms.

1. Central nervous system problems.
Hiccups can be the sign of problems such as cancer, oncoming stroke, internal infections or injuries.

2. Metabolic problems. Sometimes decreased kidney function or hyperventilation have hiccups as symptoms. These chemical processes can cause disruptions in the diaphragm.

3. Irritation of nerves. When the nerves in the head, neck and chest get disrupted or irritated they can cause hiccups to occur.

4. Mental health problems. Sometimes mental health problems can cause the onset of hiccups, although not common, it has been proven.

5. Anesthesia or surgery can also cause the commencement of hiccups.

If you get the hiccups once or twice, you should look into common hiccups remedies. But if they keep returning, it might be time to see your doctor and get to the bottom of things. You wouldnÕt want to let a problem like one of the aforementioned to get more serious than it needs to be. Pay attention to your health, but also remember that the hiccups are common, so donÕt jump to conclusions before seeing your doctor.

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
