An Albany Day

Good Sunday morning! There's still time, if you haven't done so, to visit the Tulip Festival happening thru 6pm at Washington Park in Albany, New York...
When I sat down to breakfast on Saturday morning, I decided to have a donut --- the particular brand I chose are as near as you can get to a decent donut --- they may not be Krispy Kremes and they're not the "old" "good" Dunkin's, but one of these guys with a cup of coffee triggered memories of Brook's Doughut Shop on Northern Blvd., years ago. Their donuts were my-t-fine! Nothing like 'em these days...

Hurrah for tulips --- even though climate change brought them out way too early, so by Tulip Festival time, they had peaked.

Such a mass of humanity at the festival! I went over to Washington Park for the 64th Annual Albany Tulip Festival Saturday afternoon... so many faces, but not a single person I knew! It reminded me of Hong Kong - people like ants on the street. Sadly, most of the crafts for sale are way overpriced, reflecting the lousy economy. You can still get some nice bamboo plants - one of the vendors - Jim's Bonsai from Belleview, Florida - has the best bamboo - very green and healthy, and he knows his business! Gave me a good tip: NEVER water your bamboo with tap water. He says bottled natural spring water is best. That could be why my plants have been turning yellow.

Of course I had a nice big chunk of FRIED DOUGH! I never pass it up when I see it sold at any event!

In case you forgot (how could you!) Today is Mother's Day, so I'll wish you and your mom the best! Cheers!

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
