My Notes on the Economy

My blood boils like there's no tomorrow when I read stories like this one!
I'll lay out a rough timeline for you as to why the US economy is struggling so badly.

1949-50 General Motors (GM), Firestone and Standard Oil conspire to undermine the nation's electric rail system, including intracity and intercity trolleys. The idea is to replace 'em with busses, which will earn the companies money from sales, maintenance, continual need for fuel and for new tires!

mid 1960s - Silver money discontinued

late 1960s - Moms begin entering the workfroce, first part-time, later full - thank-you, bra-burners!

circa 1971 - Arab Oil Embargo - petrodollars and gas lines

late 1980s / early 90s - HMOs appear and multiply like weeds - it's wondeful! FREE health and dental care for all families, paid by ??? - the health insurance industry grew like a crazy weed, undermining the medical profession as it did... until...

At the same time, cars like the GEO Metro Mini-wagon and Toyota Echo (and there was a mightly little Honda too) were on sale - they got around 55-MPG! Sales were weak.

somewhere in the 90s - The EV1 Electric Car debuts - a marketing campaign and lend-lease program proves dangerous to GM's money-hungry ruler, so the car is recalled and crushed and even the blueprints are destroyed. The cars were so clerly designed and constructed they actually cause tires to wear out verrrrry slowly - so no gas + little tire wear = "chicken little" scenario for GM, tiremakers and oil companies (remember them from 1949-50?) GM re-tooled the EV1 factory to manufacture 8mpg HUMMERS for the american consumer market - which was dumb enough to buy them!

mid to late 1990s - "dot com" debacle stings investors - wipes out a lot of life savings

2000s - greed fuels the housing boom and eventual collapse - more life savings wiped out

Wow, huh?

Here's What Else Is Killing US Now :::

We're all aware of the UNEMPLOYMENT crisis. But there is MORE.
[1] There are millions of Americans who longer factor into the numbers released monthly because they've exhausted their unemployment insurance benefits.
[2] Shrinking salaries thanks to wage cuts and no-raises mean the people still working can barely - or - are no longer able to - make ends meet! FLAT INCOMES CANNOT KEEP UP WITH EXPENSES! And those HMOs and health care bennies? Gone! I just co-payed $149 for a prescription! And I have "excellent" health insurance!

Household wealth is dropping across the board - throughout all class lines in the "99 per cent" sector, folks are scrimping, not saving! And the college student loan crisis is not only despicable, it's heartbreaking! Who was the idiot who stood by and watched that happen?

Despite what the Presidential Candidates (Obama + Romney) may tell you while in "campaign mode," PROSPERITY is NOWHERE IN SIGHT!

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
