Freedom To BLOG!

Ethiopia's federal court has sentenced Ethiopian dissident blogger Eskinder Nega and 23 other opposition activists to long prison terms for “participating in a terrorist organization”. Eskinder is the winner of Pen America's PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award for his endeavor for freedom of expression in an extremely inhospitable media landscape.

Moving on to the USA - whatever happened to the "freedom" to watch the boob tube? You gotta PAY! The same old tired played-out scenario - this is why your cable bill is over $100 a month. And if it is, PLEASE get a life! There is no way you should be paying that kind of money for the simple pleasure of watching television!

via Dragon Blogger ::: DirecTv and Viacom Channel Blackout: Spongebob Walks the Plank - Since Tuesday, DirecTv and Viacom have engaged in a battle royale over drafting a new contract to replace the now expired 7 year contract... blah, blah, blah!

Rapper T-Pain tweeted a link to a North Korean film that claims to “expose Western propaganda.” The film uses images of celebrity excess, plastic surgery, the slave trade and homelessness to paint Americans as dangerous, parasitic freaks. Celebrity culture is portrayed as a tool of evil American propagandists and celebrities like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Tyra Banks are “collaborators” helping to control the population. more »

Among the greatest of freedoms Americans enjoy, is the freedom to run for public office. Although it can be a daunting task if you are aiming for, say, the Governor's seat, because (like all else) your success depends upon MONEY - specifially, if you are not from a wealthy family, you need to raise some of your own!

Here in New York candidates often make friends and raise cash by attending small gatherings and cookouts (like this one.) I did a "drive-by" on Saturday and there were a number of people there. I would have stopped and had a hot dog but I had a bucket list for the day that you would not believe, and there was nowhere to park anyway. Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
