Is a "Social Credit Card" right for YOU?

Over the last decade there have been attempts to market what one could describe as "social" credit cards -

one of the first I encountered was the RUSH CARD - touted along the lines of so " everyone can have access to the American Dream" by none other than Russell Wendell Simmons, who along with Rick Rubin founded the pioneering hip-hop label Def Jam, also created the clothing fashion lines Phat Farm, Argyleculture, and American Classics. (By the way, Simmons is the 3rd richest figure in hip-hop, having a net-worth estimate of $340 million as of April 2011.)

Some bloggers today use the Payoneer Card, a method of receiving payments for blog advertising, which are loaded right onto the plastic!

My first "online" bank account was with the now defunct Washington Mutual Bank - and you know there are some great banks out there - and I do mean "out there" as in NO brick & mortar, purely digital online operations - and they are great!

Today I found something new - I'm excited to share this with you - blogger Julia Roy writes that she has been been working with Barclaycard over the past few months on a new credit card that they launched earlier this year called the Barclaycard Ring. She's contributiung to the company blog and offers a peek into her personal financial experiences - she speaks very highly of the Barclaycard: "...when I open my wallet and see it next to my other cards, I view it as a subtle reminder to be a better borrower, thoughtful spender and more conscious consumer." You can read the complete article which links to the corporate blogpost also here.

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
