Debate

CNN POLL: Romney Annihilates...

PALIN WARNS: CHICAGO WILL STRIKE BACK; PULL SOMETHING...

Andy Borowitz: Millions of Americans Lose Consciousness

I absolutely love this time of year - and I'm a big fan of political debates - we've got going on right now between President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney. It's about 10:15 and it sounds more like a spirited conversation than a grand debate, but that's fine. We're getting a chance to see these guys explain their positions on the issues to us and to each other... your comments are welcome... I may or may not weigh back in, either by (a) updating the post or (b) adding a comment or (c) adding a Facebook comment...

UPDATE! How about (d) letting Al Gore weigh-in, instead...

  2. THE MODERATOR HAD NO CONTROL

  3. Obama is paying a price for never having bothered to tell the public the truth about the nature of the downturn. We have a weak economy because the housing bubble collapsed. The collapse cost us $700 billion in annual construction demand and $500 billion in annual consumption demand, for a total shortfall in private sector demand of $1.2 trillion.

  4. Dave, from their first words, both the president and Governor Romney got lost in a fog of details. They begged questions, frequently argued from different premises, tossed off too many details without context, and rarely held a focus long enough for folks in the audience to figure out what they were talking about.

  5. During last night's presidential debate, Mitt Romney smirked his way through dozens of mischaracterizations, distortions, and outright lies. The moderator, Jim Lehrer, never cut him off. And now the mainstream media is saying that Mitt won the debate.

We can't let Romney "win" the debate on a boatload of lies.

He lied about his tax plan, his deficit plan, and Medicare. He lied about what "Obamacare" would do. He lied, baldly and convincingly, about Obama's entire presidency.

And research shows that when lies get repeated enough times people will believe them—no matter how outlandish they might seem. The only way to keep Romney honest is to make sure the facts get corrected on the spot.

WAIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO COMMENT?
Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

I NEED TO BE HEARD! BUT I DONT WANT TO PAY.
Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
