10 Questions For Blogging Communards

Improving / Enhancing the 2 way:

Now that we have firmly established the fact that blogs are not going away, let's think about and discuss everything related to the craft. Blogging is sweet. Everyday people blog. Politicians blog. Celebrities blog. People become celebrities via blogging. Blog themselves develop 'personalities' over time.

What is your story? What is your unique personal blogging experience? Are you simply keeping a diary or chronicle? Are you blogging to inform? Are you blogging for fame or fortune or as a hobby? Why did you begin a blog? What or who got you started?

I have a few questions for you. Answer as many or few as you like. After the jump you can read my responses. The process here is a very simple one: answer the questions then leave a comment, if you like, review / comment / interact with other readers...

(1) What are you thinking when you write a new article, publish a new post? Do you want to share information? Share a personal experience? Propose a new idea or theory? Entertain?

(2) Before publishing, are you able to spell-check your post and verify grammar usage? Do you even think about it or care?

(3) How do you add and/or edit graphic images and photos? Do you create original material or do you "borrow" from other places. If you "borrow" do you check copyrights?

(4) Do you check for keywords that would apply to your article? Do you look to see if the subject matter appears in Google Trends or is trending on Twitter?

(5) Do you check to see if other blogs/bloggers are publishing articles similar to yours? Do you try to analyze blogs that you regard as 'competitors'?

(6) Do you routinely 'audit' or otherwise check your blog's statistics? Are you aware of who your readers are and where they are coming from? Do you 'interlink' posts and set links to open new windows or tabs so you won't 'lose' a reader by accident or distraction?

(7) Can your readers easily communicate with you and vice-versa? Do you keep a watchful eye on comments and respond to them in a timely manner?

(8) Once in awhile do you e-mail an old or new reader to deepen the bond? Is it easy for new readers to navigate through your blog, and is it easy for them to 'get a feel' of what your blog (and perhaps you) are all about?

(9) Do you leave a trail of breadcrumbs for others to follow? Do you comment on other blogs? Are you active on twitter, sina weibo, facebook, LinkedIn, etc.?

(10) 2 Questions (for facebook users*)

As a blogger, how do you use Facebook to interact with your readers / followers?

Have you looked into the benefits of a fanpage over those of a personal account?

*You folks are welcome to leave your comments via fb

Here we go... my answers... leave yours in either comments area at the bottom of this post!

(1) What are you thinking when you write a new article, publish a new post? Do you want to share information? Share a personal experience? Propose a new idea or theory? Entertain?

All of the above, depending on my mood and intent.

(2) Before publishing, are you able to spell-check your post and verify grammar usage? Do you even think about it or care?

Depends on what computer and browser I am using. Mistakes are corrected as warranted.

(3) How do you add and/or edit graphic images and photos? Do you create original material or do you "borrow" from other places. If you "borrow" do you check copyrights?

I strive to be original. I use a lot of my own drawings and photos. I make collages and photo-composites.

(4) Do you check for keywords that would apply to your article? Do you look to see if the subject matter appears in Google Trends or is trending on Twitter?

Sometimes. Well, actually, rarely. Mostly because I don't have enough time to do so.

(5) Do you check to see if other blogs/bloggers are publishing articles similar to yours? Do you try to analyze blogs that you regard as 'competitors'?

Nope. Again, no time!

(6) Do you routinely 'audit' or otherwise check your blog's statistics? Are you aware of who your readers are and where they are coming from? Do you 'interlink' posts and set links to open new windows or tabs so you won't 'lose' a reader by accident or distraction?

A long time ago I made checking blog stats easy to do. And now Google offers free stat service built-in to the blogger/blog*spot system. I still think there is a 'cap' on visitors and since I use three different systems to measure my blog activity, I see a lot of times the figures do not agree at all. I always use the target_blank html language feature so that 9 out of 10 times my blog stays open while readers follow a link.

(7) Can your readers easily communicate with you and vice-versa? Do you keep a watchful eye on comments and respond to them in a timely manner?

Yes. Time permitting. (Damn you, clock!)

(8) Once in awhile do you e-mail an old or new reader to deepen the bond? Is it easy for new readers to navigate through your blog, and is it easy for them to 'get a feel' of what your blog (and perhaps you) are all about?

Yes. I think so.

(9) Do you leave a trail of breadcrumbs for others to follow? Do you comment on other blogs? Are you active on twitter, sina weibo, facebook, LinkedIn, etc.?

YES to all!

(10) 2  Questions (for facebook users*)

As a blogger, how do you use Facebook to interact with your readers / followers?

I try not to. Facebook has too many flaws and security risks. It is the "bottom feeder" of my internet activities blueprint.

Have you looked into the benefits of a fanpage over those of a personal account?

No. It's just a matter of choice: I don't think it's right for me.

There are many additional areas of blogging I haven't touched on HERE.

COMMENTING CHARGES
Per comment rate: $2
Payable by either clicking the BitCoin "tip me" button or the PayPal "donate" button in the sidebar.

WAIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO COMMENT?
Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

I NEED TO BE HEARD! BUT I DONT WANT TO PAY.
Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
