Avast is turning into an abomination! I had a miserably frustrating experience with Avast AntiVirus, once a bellwether, now a real pain in the ass!
Now it has crippled my computer!
It didn't take long for me to figure out what the root casue of my problem was. About 3 or 4 days ago, Avast Antivirus updated itself on my desktop computer. Shortly after, it nuked my BlackBerry tether exe file, for no reason (much the same as it did with the Virgin Mobile file in the link above)!
The next day I switched the computer on, but after WinXP loaded, I found I couldn't open anything by clicking on an icon. And I couldn't connect to the internet. I decided to roll the system back to an earlier restore point. October 23rd. Soon, everything was fine. Until a day later, working on a file, the little Avast updater notification box popped up in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Next time I turned the machine on, the "can't click" problem was back. I tried to think of any website I had visited or anything I had done differently. Hmmm. The only thing that happened was that Avast update. So I rolled the computer system files back to October 23rd once again, and this time (see image) I stopped Avast dead in its tracks - forbidding it to update itself. That worked!
I remain convinced that the programmers working for Avast must be doubling over in laughter - I think it is an "inside job" - a little sabotage - because why else would benign files and normal operations be targeted by an antivirus program? I have lost faith in Avast. I won't be updating. i will be using the techniques that I have employed in keeping my $1 laptop safe.
