3 Important Keyword Research Terms

If you are an online business owner, then keyword research is an important tool in your positioning arsenal. Most new online traffic comes from search terms that people type in every day. Whether they're looking for a new pair of Sketchers, replacement tires, or a set of authentic Hummel figurines, their search terms could lead them right to your shop. That is, if you position yourself to receive them. Keyword research allows you to build your site content and other SEO efforts around a targeted set of keywords that makes it easier for people to find you in search engine results. Here are three important terms to keep in mind when doing your keyword research.

Long Tail Keywords

Long tail keywords are keywords that contain three or more words. As opposed to short tail keywords, long tails are very specific. According to SEOMoz, long tail keywords make up about 70% of search engine traffic. They also convert to sales better, since they're often used by searchers who are further along in the buying cycle. After all, a searcher who uses the term "red and white Converse sneakers" knows just what they're looking for.

Search Volume

When using a keyword research tool, such as the one offered by 1Shopping Cart, search volume refers to the average number of people who search for a given term in a month. Ideally, you will use the keywords that have the highest monthly search volume. There is no magic number when it comes to search volume. This will vary from niche to niche, though higher numbers are usually better.

Keyword Competition

When considering search volume, you must also consider the competition for those keywords. In just about any niche, you're not going to be the only person wanting to rank for a given set of keywords. Your keyword competition will determine how difficult it will be to rank for a given keyword. This is another reason why ranking for long tail keywords is beneficial. Long tail keywords tend to have less competition.

When planning your keyword research, long tail keywords, search volume, and keyword competition play a big role in the success of your SEO campaign. Keep these three terms in mind while putting together your keyword list, and you'll be off to a great start.

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
