Apps: OK For Some, Not For Me!

Whenever possible I avoid cloud computing. I avoid updating apps and programs that are working just fine for me. There are a lot of new "intuitive" apps on the scene that try to gauge or otherwise figure out what the user wants to see or hear or do.  I prefer to hang on to some semblance of freedom and make my own listening choices!
My Fly Ying dual-sim hIphone has FM and TV - REAL tuners, no screwy apps
Lemmings take note! Rather than just providing a live stream from a local affiliate, or highlighting random shows, the app learns from users' location and listening history (so individual broadcasts are never repeated) to offer curated suggestions on what to listen to at any given moment.

My favorite NPR station, over-the-air, no cellular data, no wi-fi needed!
No thanks, no "curated suggestions" for moi! I'm not keen on any app that tried to "read me" or otherwise guess at what I want to listen to. That's why I would NEVER download anything like Pandora. My Chinese smartphone has a built-in FM radio tuner. The only way you will take radio away from me is if you pry it from my cold dead hands. It's a personal preference, and just my opinion. That's all!

Fast-Food Workers Vote to Strike, Engage in Civil Disobedience Until They Win $15 and a Union

(Chicago, IL) – More than 1,300 fast-food workers from across the country unanimously passed a resolution Saturday to “do whatever it takes,” including striking and engaging in civil disobedience, to win $15 and a union (full text of resolution below). The vote came during a two-day nationwide convention of fast-food workers, the first of its kind, outside Chicago, IL.

“The fight for $15 and a union is the civil rights struggle of today. We’re prepared to do whatever it takes, even if it involves personal risk, to win,” said Laquita Jackson, 33, who has worked at McDonald’s in Memphis, TN for 10 years and makes $8.10 an hour. “Winning justice didn’t come easy for Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks or Cesar Chavez and it won’t come easy for us. But being at the convention, surrounded by thousands of fast-food workers just as dedicated as me, I know that we are going to win.”

Fed up with the industry’s refusal to listen to them, workers at the convention discussed strategies to escalate their campaign, which in only a year and a half has changed the politics of the nation. Workers attended sessions on civil disobedience and leadership training, applying past movements for racial and economic justice to today, and building power in local communities.

Yekaterina Parkhomenko

Yekaterina Parkhomenko (Named as Ekaterina Parkhomenko -  said to be pro-Russian and from Torez near where the plane came down ) uploaded a photograph on Instagram, the photo-sharing social network, with the caption: 'Mascara from Amsterdam; to be precise, from the field. Well, you understand.' She said she had not collected it herself but had got it “from a familiar friend”. [Original Article w/pictures] [English Newspaper Story]

Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte said he was “shocked at the pictures of utterly disrespectful behaviour at this tragic spot”.

#LocalVoicesTalk about Women in Islam

On Thursday, July 24, The WIP and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies will co-host Twitter chat “Women in Islam: Myth vs. Reality.” Join the conversation from 9:30 am – 10:30 am PDT / 12:30 pm - 1:30pm EDT on Twitter. #LocalVoicesTalk

The idea for “Women in Islam: Myth vs. Reality” was inspired by two CNS fellows from Pakistan – Maria Syed and Nidaa Shahid. Both fellows wrote this summer for The WIP addressing the common misperceptions in the West of women in Pakistan. After sharing the topic with CNS fellow Abdulmajeed Ibrahim of Nigeria, the topic grew to address common misperceptions in the West about Islam. The vision for this conversation is to engage Muslims and Non-Muslims to cultivate better cross-cultural understanding.

The Twitter event follows my radio presentation "Muslimahs On Faith And Women's Issues," which aired the weekend of July 19-20.

More information + bios of the chat panel can be found here.

How To Look Good In Pictures

Think ANGLES. Go through your favorite pictures of yourself and look for patterns. Do you like the way you look from a certain angle?

Facing the camera straight on is rarely flattering; instead, turn your head to a 3/4 position to give your features depth.

Mirror Mirror! When you smile a specific way? Practice that smile whenever you find yourself looking in a mirror! (practice a few poses while you're at it!)

Think CONFIDENCE. Be proud of yourself - if you think you're ugly, you'll convey that to the camera. If you have concerns about your teeth, smile with a closed mouth. Remember, the key to a bad photo is being nervous and thinking it will be bad...

Keep your best poses in mind the next time you have your photo taken. Is there someone you admire who always looks great in pictures? Think of/be that person while the camera is looking at you!

Remember, above all, photography is a game of averages - a crapshoot. The more pictures snapped of you in sequence, the easier it will be to find at least one that passes self-muster.

And then there is your secret weapon - PHOTOSHOP - don't be afraid to use it!

5 Useless Elements You DO NOT Need To Remove From Your Blog Right Now!***

*** IF you are on Google's blogger (blogspot) platform, THEN the "Useless Elements" article is USELESS!

I love good advice, but pay no attention to those who would have you possibly screw up your blog in order to align it stylistically with what those self-absorbed guru "blogging experts" demand.  Yes, I know, blah blah blah the minimalist look is "in."

Betcha didn't know your blog ALREADY has a minimalist look (if you're on blogger!)

Here are TWO minimalist views of this very blog you are reading: my favorite is the mobile version. It meets all the "specs" called for in the "Useless elements" article.

This next one will display differently in different browsers on different systems. It is
the feedburner version of my blog, also minimalist.

I don't know if alternatives are available for WordPress and other platforms. (If they are please leave them in the comments!) But the lesson here is twofold:
(1) Bloggers, don't jump if someone says to do this or do that
(2) You have just saved hours of time and numerous headaches and things you'd be sorry you'd done later on down the road!  BLOG ON!

Community Reading: "THE MEANING OF THE FOURTH OF JULY FOR THE NEGRO"

THE PEACE & JUSTICE CENTER INVITES THE COMMUNITY TO READ "THE MEANING OF THE FOURTH OF JULY FOR THE NEGRO"
A SPEECH BY FREDERICK DOUGLASS ON JULY 8th, 2014

(Burlington,VT) At 6pm on July 8th on the steps of City Hall in Burlington, the Peace & Justice Center will host a public reading of Frederick Douglass' fiery 1852 speech, "The Meaning of the Fourth of July to the Negro." Members of the community are invited to take part in the communal activity.

On July 5, 1852, Douglass, a former slave and leading abolitionist, begged the "race question" at an event in Rochester, NY, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

SummerScreen is here!

Movies + Music + Food + Beer + Brooklyn = SummerScreen!

With the Northside Festival now safely in our rearview mirror and temperatures rising to near-ludicrous levels, it can mean only one thing: it’s time for SummerScreen! We're kicking off this year's series on Wednesday, July 9, with Back to the Future, because a) it’s a perfect movie and, b) the soundtrack was the first ever album I owned—on cassette, no less.

There will be plenty of delectable local food and beverages available, courtesy of Sixpoint Brewery, Rekorderlig Cider, Handsome Hanks, PizzaMoto, Coolhaus, V Spot, La Crepe C'est Si Bon, Soul Snack, Landhaus, Mighty Meaty, and Between the Buns. So come with an empty stomach and a full heart. You'll find us every Wednesday at McCarren Park at the corner of Bedford and N. 12th St. (right next to the tennis courts). Gates open at 6pm, the music (full lineup below, after the jump) starts at 6:30, and we'll get the movie started by sundown.
