What is

Something new popped up today - re-directs on my blog*spot. I did a little detective work, and found the underlying cause! Turns out the re-directs also affect WordPress sites!

I have a very stealth computer system with various protections in place. I know it is highly unlikely that any sort of virus or root kit or Trojan would be able to sneak onto my laptop. Just to be sure, I ran some tests, and I went ran trend micro house call just to verify. As I suspected, no viruses, no Trojans, no root-kits, no bad guys on the computer at all. Here's what the problem is, and it has a very very simple solution.

"HouseCall" Just in case!
The problem comes from within sitemeter, if you have the code anywhere on your blog or website. You may have installed it years ago, but like those Martians in the Tom Cruise "War of the Worlds," they can lie dormant for quite some time. I'm not exactly sure what wakes them up... but when you start to see re-directs to places including

You can be sure that your browser cookies are being re-set, but it is also REDIRECTING your site to an "ad" page forcing your visitors to click a "Return to Originl Site" link. Re-directs can occur on blog*spot, WordPress, and possibly other pages which have Sitemeter installed (free or paid versions).  A lot of other people have experienced the same problem with sitemeter !

Find and remove the sitemeter code or javascript. That is all!

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
