#Bitcoin NY News May 21, 2015

The NY Bitcoin Group has teamed up with BitPay to allow people from anywhere in the world to buy pizza for the children at The Bernard & Millie Duker Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center in celebration of Bitcoin Pizza Day on May 22.

On May 18, 2010, a programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz out of Florida was hungry one night and posted on a Bitcoin forum the following: "I'll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas ... like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day. I like having left over pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I'm aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don't have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a 'breakfast platter' at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you're happy!" His wish was granted four days later by a gentleman in the UK who ordered the pizzas to Laszlo's house with his credit card in exchange for the 10,000 bitcoins (around $30 at that time's exchange rate).

Today those 10,000 bitcoins are worth approximately $2,400,000.
This marks the first ever real goods transaction conducted with bitcoins and the most expensive pizza ever bought. "It's been five years since that historic transaction took place," said Chris Dosch, a member of the NY Bitcoin Group. "The fact that someone halfway around the world can have pizza delivered to a children's hospital without having to enter credit card info, or get hit with international fees is a great demonstration of this technology and a perfect way to celebrate Bitcoin Pizza Day."

Recently, many charities have started to accept bitcoin donations as a way to get the younger and more tech-savvy crowd involved - charities like the American Red Cross, United Way, and our very own Ronald McDonald House of the Capital Region. "While bitcoin may originally have been used to buy pizza, it's now being used to help in Nepal's disaster relief and to fight childhood illnesses. We are grateful for the opportunity to enable so many wonderful charities to accept bitcoin donations for their admirable work. At this point, bitcoin is much more than a nerd's currency; it's changed thousands of lives for the better and is set to change many more in the future," stated Julia Patterson, communications manager at BitPay.

Pizza purchases can be made via the link below anytime from now until May 21, 2015 and will be delivered to The Bernard & Millie Duker Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center on May 22, 2015 between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM.

Meantime, BTC Flap ( ) has hit the charts with their latest offer on Bitcoin purchase: they’re not only offering 10% more than Blockchain’s official rate for each Bitcoin they purchase, but they are also putting a surprise gift on transactions amounting 10+ BTC.

BTC Flap’s marketing team has gone creative enough to attach a special gift to each and every transaction amounting more than 10 BTC: they are offering a 24-karat gold coin with the Bitcoin engraved on both sides. The mechanism is simple: each customer selling over 10 BTC within one transaction is asked to provide a mailing address and the company delivers the gift via a courier.

BTC Flap’s Marketing Manager Jim Walsh is enthusiastic with their latest gift idea, while being positive that people involved in the cryptocurrency market are definitely welcoming a jewelry-like item engraved with the Bitcoin logo, being offered to them for doing business with BTC Flap.

“In this way, we are offering our customers a somehow materialized version of this virtual, non-material coin. We think it’s pretty cool to put your hands on a coin carrying the Bitcoin’s logo, especially if you’re passionate about the cryptocurrencies.”, declares Jim Welsh, company’s Marketing Manager.

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
