Browserology 101

Browser befuddlement!

There's nothing more frustrating than having browser issues. From injected ads to websites that won't display to auto-play features we can't seem to turn off, there always seems to be a problem...

Beware of the "cloud-browsers" which is another step to try to take control of all things computer out of your hands and out of your control. When the day arrives that these viewers become mandatory, there may not be a workaround - except, maybe, just maybe downloading and installing some sort of "developer" version that works offline.

I've issued numerous warnings about the "cloud" concept. I have a wonderful IBM T42 ThinkPad that I have customized to enhance my OFFLINE experience.

I have taken steps not only to secure the system when I'm ONline, but I have four browser options PLUS a sweet little old browser "off by one" --- Off By One Web Browser may be the world's smallest and fastest web browser with full HTML 3.2 support. It is a completely self-contained, stand-alone 1.2 MB application with no dependencies on any other browser or browser component. For Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. There's a link to download it after the jump. And it sometimes renders and reveals webpages when the others can't or won't. It comes in very handy when I have to use dial-up in a pinch (T42 has a phone plug as well as wi-fi and USB for a broadband dongle; multiple options to connect to the net!)

I don't need an internet connection to work on projects or reports, edit files or anything else (except for email and Skype, of course!) I plan on keeping the unit in service as long as possible.

I keep my eyes out for any and tools or apps or programs that can assist older operating systems and browsers so that I don't see any nonsense like this:

So you think you might try accessing pages that won't render via an online browser viewing tool? Think again!

"Browser Sandbox Test any browser instantly online. Click to run with no installs."

Not true. There's a hefty megabyte plug-in that must be downloaded.

"Connecting. Tired of waiting? Get the developer plan and skip the queue!"

That must be what they want. I waited and waited and waited. Nothing displayed.

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
