Hot Tuna In Town

Hot Tuna began life during a hiatus in Jefferson Airplane's touring schedule in early 1969 while Grace Slick was undergoing recovery from throat node surgery that had left her unable to perform. Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Paul Kantner, and new drummer Joey Covington played several shows around San Francisco including the Airplane's original club, The Matrix, before Jefferson Airplane resumed performing to support the album Volunteers.

Jorma will soon turn 75, and here's your chance to see him and Jack play while they're still young!

Steady as She Goes out now on Red House Records

Saturday, September 26 - 3:45pm
Speed of Sound Festival
263 New Hackensack Rd
Wappingers Falls, NY 12590
Tickets: $55-$99

The duo, who never quit playing live,
returned with their first new album in 20 years in 2011, the critically acclaimed Steady As She Goes (2011), a collection that proved that the two were still at the top of their game. Decades after Kaukonen and Casady first played Woodstock, they went into the late Levon Helm’s studio in upstate New York with famed producer Larry Campbell to record 12 new tracks with mandolin player Barry Mitterhoff and drummer Skoota Warner (Cyndi Lauper, Matisyahu, Santana). The band plugged in to deliver the electric Hot Tuna album that fans had been waiting for.

Hot Tuna continues to tour and Jorma released a new solo album, Ain’t In No Hurry, early in 2015. Jack and Jorma have also performed material from their old band the Jefferson Airplane this year in honor of the legendary Bay Area psychedelic band’s 50th anniversary this year. Hot Tuna continues to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with, bursting with creative energy while remaining rock steady as one of rock’s truly iconic bands.

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
