The Islamic State is known by a varity of names such as the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (also ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). It is also known as Daesh, based on an Arabic acronym.
ISIS buys bombs and pays fighters with the billions of dollars it makes from the oil fields, mineral mines, and banks under its control. ISIS also imposes taxes on the people living inside its territory in Iraq and Syria. According to CNN, ISIS raked in $2 billion in 2014 alone. Iran has arrested 53 people for running pro-#ISIS websites.
A leaked internal Islamic State manual shows ISIS plans for building a state in Iraq and Syria complete with government departments, a treasury and an economic program for self-sufficiency:
