What Blogging Has Become

A character by name of "Robinson Meyer" has an article posted in The Atlantic [LinK] which is more B.S. than anything else. As my friend and fellow-blogger Enemy Kombatant once wrote, "think of a college or high-school kid writing a paper and just loading it with extra verbiage after doing little or no actual research."
The Ultimate Blogger: Xiaxue!
Robinson thinks old-school blogs no longer exist as a viable medium - or maybe are no longer popular. Very wrong on both counts...

#ISIS has a plan... Do YOU?

'Jihadi John' identified?   We knew this already, those of us in the news business closely following Middle East events. The fellow who has been the icon for #ISIS has been almost certifiably identified as Mohammed Emwazi, a Briton from a well-to-do family who grew up in West London and graduated from college with a degree in computer programming. [Washington Post]

A recently published e-book titled “The Islamic State” details everything from ice cream money for jihadists to special ops forces in ISIS ranks, talks about how the caliph hides in plain sight, and suggests that after Kobane they can fight under the radar with drive-bys on bikes.

Read it Online (100 pages):

Clocking in at a uniform 100 pages, like other titles in ISIS’ “Black Flags” series, the book is a sequel to 2014′s “The Revived Caliphate” and includes chapters such as how to hold territory and how to train children, aka “lion cubs.” [Read more]

CNN reports that more than 20,000 foreigners have flocked to fight for ISIS, the radical Sunni group that controls portions of Iraq and Syria.
They hail from 90 countries, and an estimated 3,400 fighters come from Western states, according to Nicholas Rasmussen, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Google Clampdown On Nude, Sexually Explicit Blogger Content

UPDATE Friday, Feb. 27 ::: Google reverses ban on explicit Blogger content - Bloggers' backlash was a ROAR. And Google knew if it unleashed a torrent of bots, thousands of non-porn blogs would be nuked. Nothing good would come of it. Google would have been dragged thru the mud on twitter and facebook, and that was exactly what Apple was waiting for. A mole at Apple leaked word back to master control. Google still requires blog*spot bloggers mark any explicit contentl as “adult” so that people who don’t want to see such material can avoid it. (I would still recommend routinely saving your template and content files onto your computer or thumb drive. Make it a habit!)

All seems to be well. For now. Until the next 'crisis.' Here's the original post:

Perhaps you received an email from Google regarding your blog, and you're wondering, "Why did I get this?"

What if my blog is "innocent" of all charges?

Blogger is following the example of Twitter-owned social network Vine, which has prohibited the sharing of pornographic clips.  Check your blog and mark your calendar: as of March 23, 2015, you won't be able to publicly share images and video that are sexually explicit or show graphic nudity on Blogger. People have told me my homemade spaghetti and meatballs is a "sinful dish," so I'm hoping I'll be in the clear.

The Kayla Mueller Mystery

As American newspapers begin publicly identifying prominent Christians (starting with Catholics), some disturbing news is emerging about the girl featured on infotainment TV as "the gal next door."

Front Page Mag says "The presumed Islamic State murder victim Kayla Mueller isn’t quite the saintly martyr that President Obama and the media are trying to make Americans believe."   The article goes on to characterize Mueller an Islamic terrorist sympathizer who worked for the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a terrorist-linked organization that attempts to sabotage the anti-terrorism activities of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

Mueller's death is another nail in the coffin of US-Israel relations. In an opinion piece at the ultra-nationalist Israeli publication Arutz Sheva, anti-Palestinian activist Lee Kaplan called Kayla Mueller’s death “another Rachel Corrie propaganda story in the making, and the western media is falling for it again, or embracing it on purpose.”

Rachel Corrie was an American human rights activist, deliberately run over and killed by an Israeli army bulldozer in 2003 while she defended a Palestinian house in Gaza from demolition.

LiveLeak.com ::: Kayla spent time in southern Turkey (the base for foreign Jihadist fighters and weapons entering Syria) before illegally slipping across the border into Syria to join up with those she was convinced were the victims of Syrian government persecution. Kayla took up residence in a sector of Aleppo controlled by the terrorists. Fellow Arizonan, John McCain would call them moderates and his friends. Indeed, this was 2012 and ISIS had not been formally announced. Kayla was taken captive in August 2013 while leaving a hospital in Aleppo. Since ISIS did not exist we can only conclude that those who took Kayla by force and held her until her death were the very ‘moderates’ whom Senator McCain pushed us to back. Alternatively, the ‘moderates’ who took Kayla by force later sold her to ISIS as they did with Steven Sotloff. That they later developed the moniker of ISIS is irrelevant to the fate of Kayla Mueller.

Two Sides To This Story: Sound of Torture (2013) פייסבוק‬

What most Americans don't know: South Tel Aviv is somewhat akin to living in South Central L.A. during times of heightened racial tensions. Residents there complain that migrant "infiltrators" have made their neighborhood a "living hell."

How did this happen? Most people have no idea - ask someone on the street - they would likely tell you that Israel is a Jewish nation "homestate haven" and based on what they may have seen on TV is what they think Israel is all about.

But now, along comes a PBS program that tells one side of the story. By the way, BOTH videos featured here just "scratch the surface." The sides of the story are much broader and deeper!

Copper Hands

As an admirer of fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, the Copper Hands gloves seemed an ideal accessory to "borrow" from the stylish fashion designer. He doesn't wear this particular type of glove, but the whole glove thing is pretty exotic. It's a fashion statement.

That was the key reason I decided to give these fingerless gloves that are “infused with real copper” a try.

As someone who suffers a little computer "mouse fatigue" in his right hand, these compression gloves are a godsend. Believe it or not, my typing is more accurate since wearing the gloves! Unlike Karl's these are thin. lightweight but warm. The copper inserts/beadlets, regardless of any theapeutic effect, are stylish, imho. They are warm, and ideal for iPhone or phablet use since the tips of the fingers are exposed. Not a substitute for winter gloves in freezing temperatures, these babies are great handwarmers on brisk windy fall strolls, and I wear them at the gym too! They seem to enhance my guitar strumming abilities as well.

As for the "copper," - I'm not sure if that part is real or not, but I do know my hands feel better when and after wearing the gloves.

Hayat Boumeddiene in Dabiq and Dar al Islam

I believe the more you know the better off you are, especially in America's 'Free Society.'

If you haven't been reading DABIQ, you don't know jack about ISIS - the org has released Issue 7 of Dabiq, in English.

  •  You can read the 83-page PDF version here. Anyone wishing to view the publication should conduct a search, as the sites making copies available are either being knocked offline or forced to delete the files. If there is anything that particularly interests you, let me know in the comments area.
The new release discusses ISIS' latest atrocities (the killing of the Japanese hostages and Jordanian pilot) and profiles Kosher Market killer Amedy Coulibaly. It ends with John Cantlie, who writes:
Despite being a prisoner, I’ve been shown respect and kindness, which I haven’t seen from my own government. Even if I had the choice, could I honestly return to and live in a country that disowned the other Britons, all their families, and myself so contemptuously?
Hayat Boumeddiene, Widow of dead French terrorist Coulibaly, is interviewed both in Islamic State French-language magazine «Dar al Islam» (GO TO PAGE 11) and English counterpart Dabiq (ABOVE).

Mohamed Fahmy's lawyer Amal Clooney pushes for release of jailed Canadian journalist in letter

THIS JUST IN ::: Egyptian authorities have set a retrial date: February 12.  Previously, Lawyer Amal Clooney requested a meeting with Egypt’s president and foreign minister to discuss the status of her client, detained Canadian-Egyptian journalist Mohamed Fahmy. Clooney has been pushing for the release of Fahmy, who has been jailed in Cairo since December 2013, when he and his Al Jazeera colleagues Australian journalist Peter Greste ( Al Jazeera's East Africa correspondent, was released on February 1 after being jailed for 400 days. ) and Egyptian Baher…

Find A Baby Sitter

Now here's something, that, if it catches on, could be really big. The saving grace of this babysitting app is that it operates on a "local microgrid" so that available babysitters can easily be verified to weed out potential child molesters and kiddie porn afficianados. How many times have you wished you had a reliable sitter, only to find out weeks or months later that there was an excellent high school or college girl or stay-at-home Mom a block or two away that could have cared for your tyke(s)? If this app takes off in Toronto, I see the concept spreading quickly across North America!

Uber-like babysitting app available for Toronto parents

The person who’s going to look after your kids might be waiting on the other side of your smartphone. At least, that’s the idea behind fledgling Toronto start-up DateNight, which aims to match parents with babysitters through a downloadable app. “We don’t employ babysitters. We help people connect with them,” explained Elize Shirdel, a 36-year-old with…

Al-Jazeera journalist Mohamed Fahmy counts hours to release from Cairo prison

Canadian Egyptian journalist Mohamed Fahmy was still behind bars Tuesday, two days after Australian Al Jazeera colleague Peter Greste was freed from a grim Cairo jail. But as Greste touched down in Australia, and the clock ticked toward Fahmy’s highly anticipated release, his fate was still in the balance. “It does look like it’s really imminent,”…

Never to doubt that you will tell your story.”

As evidenced when one compares my two "What's in your gear bag" articles (written with reporters / journalists in mind), newsgathering is changing, as is "news selling" (we all know that print has suffered at the hands of digital technology, and the fact that people want their online information addictions fed FREE of charge) - and so too, the newsroom, that beehive of gathering and disseminating, must also adapt to the changing tides of the times.

After reading these next referenced articles, you'll probably think nothing can change the shape of newsrooms to come. Bookmark this or otherwise save the URL and let's revisit 5 years from now, 2020.  You can run your mouse or cursor over the image for a full-screen view. It's from a BBC UK article where innovation team at BBC News Labs created a timeline of what they believe are key future developments for technology and news, as well as some recent milestones.
