What is x.vindicosuite.com?

Something new popped up today - re-directs on my blog*spot. I did a little detective work, and found the underlying cause! Turns out the re-directs also affect WordPress sites!

I have a very stealth computer system with various protections in place. I know it is highly unlikely that any sort of virus or root kit or Trojan would be able to sneak onto my laptop. Just to be sure, I ran some tests, and I went ran trend micro house call just to verify. As I suspected, no viruses, no Trojans, no root-kits, no bad guys on the computer at all. Here's what the problem is, and it has a very very simple solution.

"HouseCall" Just in case!
The problem comes from within sitemeter, if you have the code anywhere on your blog or website. You may have installed it years ago, but like those Martians in the Tom Cruise "War of the Worlds," they can lie dormant for quite some time. I'm not exactly sure what wakes them up... but when you start to see re-directs to places including

adjuggler.net
demdex.net
neac.com
scorecardresearch.com
vindicosuite.com
ads.yahoo.com

You can be sure that your browser cookies are being re-set, but it is also REDIRECTING your site to an "ad" page forcing your visitors to click a "Return to Originl Site" link. Re-directs can occur on blog*spot, WordPress, and possibly other pages which have Sitemeter installed (free or paid versions).  A lot of other people have experienced the same problem with sitemeter !

Find and remove the sitemeter code or javascript. That is all!

#FashionFridays45

Today’s entry is my 6718th post!

I started this blog back in 2001 - the platform it was on vanished one day. I then moved to blog*spot, where I weblogged as Capital Region People, until it too, simply vanished, devoured by some errant bot that thought it was spam. Lucklily I kept a copy on my harddrive, and there's much of it findable on the Internet Wayback Machine.

The Mac Daddy of Fashion is of course Karl Lagerfeld - you can follow him on twitter and be sure to check out web articles about his cat, his diet and transformation.

I've followed Tavi Gevinson @tavitulle for a long time, thanks to her appearances in New York Magazine, watching the young fashion wiz climb the stairway to success! Be sure to tell the young women and girls in your life (if they haven't found her already) they can check out Tavi's Rookie Mag online!

Then there's NY's more recent "find" - Paloma Elsesser who likely has a great career ahead of her!

Most recently I've been introduced to a Florida-based fashionista, thanks to my involvement with the Media Bloggers group. Meet the wonderful Talitha of Miami!

Novelists Elisa Albert and Yelena Akhtiorskaya; Barbara Smith Writer's Events at UAlbany

Elisa Albert, novelist and short story writer, and Yelena Akhtiorskaya, novelist
March 26 (Thursday)
Seminar — 4:15 p.m., Standish Room, Science Library
Reading — 8:00 p.m., Campus Center 375

Elisa Albert is the author of the new novel After Birth (2015), a piercingly candid and outrageously funny story of motherhood. Author Lydia Davis called it, “a fast-talking, opinionated, moody, funny, and slightly desperate account of the attempt to recover from having a baby.” Albert’s previous books include the novel, The Book of Dahlia (2008) and the short story collection, How This Night is Different (2006), winner of the Moment Magazine Emerging Writer Award for Short Fiction.

Yelena Akhtiorskaya is the author of a brilliant debut novel, Panic in a Suitcase (2014), the story of two decades in the life of a Ukrainian immigrant family in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Hailed by the critics as “ingenious” (NPR), “marvelous” (Library Journal) and “hilarious” (Publishers Weekly), Panic in a Suitcase was named a “Notable Book of 2014” by the New York Times and Washington Post.

Around The Blogosphere 23 March 2015

"It’s not that you have to be a certain kind of person to make a big dream happen. You just have to be the kind of person who decides to do it and then follows through."

Ever get your Alby Mangels on? Just wanna pack up and go... travel around or maybe start a new life someplace else? This gal did! She told my friend Jessica: "It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of pieces that need to fall into place for a big change to happen. Your to-do list can start to feel impossible and suffocating. Focus on breaking it into the smallest chunks that you can and just tackle one at a time. It’s incredible how much comes together at the last minute, so just take one step after another and keep breathing." Read more »

PS - I've made a few spring changes here on the blog. I've moved up the "Life-Health-Money" bloglist in the right sidebar and added three new blogs, including Jessica's and Sarah's. This makes it easier for both me and YOU to check-in and see what's hapening on these great weblogs!

Can Artists Earn a Living in the Age of Social Media? YES THEY CAN! Not only can artists live off their work, but the Internet can actually be a lifeline for them in today's increasingly competitive marketplace. The blog RamGon (third newly added to the "Life-Health-Money" category) looks into opportunities for painters in social media and, more importantly, into how the medium can help artists to publicize and market their work. HAPPENING ON TWITTER ::: The "big news" in the U.S. is that in the wee wee hours of Monday morning, Ted Cruz confirmed on Twitter that he will run for president, making him the first official candidate to toss his hat in the ring, and the first (correct me if I'm wrong) to announce on social media.

At the launching of MéxicoLeaks, a platform that collects leaked information about possible corruption, journalist Carmen Aristegui and her research team declared that they would back the project.

This led MVS Radio, their employer, to fire Aristegui's collaborators, Daniel Lizarraga and Iriving Huerta, for supposedly compromising the company name.

In response, Aristegui demanded that the radio station rehire Lizarraga and Huerta, after which the company let her go as well.

That led to an outcry of support from followers on Twitter: Read more »

GOOGLE has made a point of making a 'hit' out of Emmy Noether. Though you may never have heard of her until now, the powers that be tell us Emmy Noether was one of the most brilliant and important mathematicians of the 20th century. They credit her with altering the course of modern physics.

#OneDirection must pay PI 'weed bond', forfeit if they use drugs

One Direction stars Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson face losing more than $5,000 each if they are caught using, or promoting, illegal drugs in Manila.

The pair have been asked to post bonds of 200,000 pesos each for a special work permit, ahead of two concerts in the Philippine capital this weekend.

Anti-Drugs Advocate Cherry Ching says her group is urging the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency to send officers to keep an eye on the band. Local immigration said the bond was intended "to protect public interest"

Are We Ready to Use Bitcoin?

CoinDesk wants to find out more about who is interested in bitcoin. Is it, as many suggest, just young, white American guys, or is there more to the community than that? Take a short survey, HERE!

Bitcoin trading strategist Mike McAra writes on marketoracle.co.uk "Our assessment now is that we might see a period of trading around $300 before possible declines or a short-term move above $300 followed by a reversal and more declines." Seems there's been a bit of hubbub over a story about IBM using the underlying exchange mechanism of Bitcoin to develop a digital cash system based on existing national currencies. Depspite what you may think, this is NOT a 'new' development!

Around The Blogsophere, Weekend Edition 14 March 15

"Around the Blogosphere" was a daily feature on my blog during about the mid 2000's - these days I don't have the time I used to to check out a lot of other blogs and usually when I find something cool, I share it via twitter or weibo. While I can't promise I'll put one out every weekend, I will post "Weekend Edition" from time to time. These are some of the blog posts I ran across during the week that I found particularly interesting, and i hope you do too!

Mommybloggers: The idea of praising young children has become a trending topic in the news recently. Some feel that it’s a good idea to tell kids how great they’re doing to help motivate them to become better at a task. But others argue that praising a child could backfire and lead to failure in the long run.

#Bitcoin Your Future

Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are part of a technology "megatrend" that could change the fundamental mechanics of transactions, according to a new report from Goldman Sachs' equity research analysts.

The report points to Bitspark as an example of a firm that lets customers remit funds by depositing cash, bypassing the need for a bank account. Bitspark then performs the transfer by exchanging it into bitcoin. If you live in New York State, you can do that yourself: all you need is a bread account and a Bitcoin ATM.

According to “The Future of Finance: Redefining The Way We Pay in the Next Decade,” the currency pair Bitcoin-Yuan comprises of 80% of the global trading volume on the Bitcoin exchanges. The dominance of China’s Bitcoin trading comes amid the ban on banks and financial institutions to invest or participate in cryptocurrencies or in associated businesses.

The report names Coinbase, BitPay and Ripple Labs as leading firms in the bitcoin space.

Mobile-friendly design

This Google test will analyze a URL and report if the page is "mobile-friendly." Itis far more up-to-date (accurate) than the W3C mobileOK Checker. This beats anything else out ther: it is "2015" - great for blog*spot/blogger and wordpress users!

Additionally, if you'd like to know how you site appears on different devices, you can check it with "screenfly" - for blog*spot/blogger blogs make sure you input your mobile address if you want to check how your site looks on mobile devices: it does not auto-convert the way the Google test does.

Shared Services

Have you noticed the new 'share' buttons I have added to newer posts?  They are designed to help you better organize your research, collaborate with others online, bookmark, re-blog and share the latest information .

Blogging is not dead. My blogs are active as ever... they are connected to twitter, weibo, facebook and Pinterest... and to special groups I've joined on facebook. My loyal readers are with me (some of you have been visiting since 2005 and a few even earlier! Thank-you!)  In the months to come, I'm planning to be a little more ative on weibo and I'm slowly (and I do mean slowly) building a Mendeley portfolio.

How do I add a Dave Lucas article to Mendeley?
Once you have navigated to a particular article, simply hover over the + share button to locate the social bookmarking buttons and click the ‘Add to Mendeley’ button. You will then be asked to log-in to your Mendeley account (unless you’re already signed in) and will be given the option to add tags or notes and take a website snapshot. The paper will then be added to your library, with all metadata extracted automatically.

I don't have Mendeley. How do I sign up?
Getting started with Mendeley couldn’t be easier. Either sign-up for a new account or log-in with your Facebook details at http://www.mendeley.com/.  Download the desktop software and Web Importer and away you go!

NY AG - "Beware of crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, Go Fund Me..."

NEW YORK – Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced that his office is offering tips to consumers for using crowdfunding websites to make charitable and other donations. The sites, which allow users to post fundraising solicitations and receive donations, are changing how individuals raise and donate funds. The websites, typically for-profit, often claim a portion of the funds raised as a commission for providing a platform for fundraising.

“New Yorkers are good and charitable people who are always willing to help others in need,” said Attorney General Schneiderman. “As more charitable giving moves online and to crowdfunding websites, there is an opportunity for users to harness innovation to achieve worthy goals. It is also important that New Yorkers follow some basic tips to stay safe and to understand how their contributions are being used.”
Crowdfunding is a growing avenue for both charitable and non-charitable giving that has eliminated barriers for both donors and those seeking donations. While most donors in New York State still use traditional methods for their charitable giving, the rapid growth in crowdfunding is changing how people think about giving and allows for direct peer-to-peer donating that differs from giving contributions to organizations.
According to Forbes, there has been a 50% increase in crowdfunding in just the last few years, and the average crowdfunding donation in 2013 was $88. As consumers utilize this new platform for giving, there are important tips that can be followed to be informed and to stay safe.

Pet Insurance

What are your thoughts about pet insurance?

It's actually a very wise decision if you have a beloved pet. One scrape with another animal or a serial pet abuser or an automobile could end up costing a thousand dollars or more in vet bills.

Pet insurance costs roughly between $15 and $29, depending on the deductible you choose and whether you are insuring a cat or a dog. $15.2 billion—went to veterinary care in the U.S. in 2014.

Better Health for Pets, Peace of Mind for Pet Owners!

My advice: choose a higher deductible if you can afford it, and remember with most plans, you are required to pay the vet bill and apply for reimbursement. (Some vets affiliate with a pet insurance provider and have different arrangements.) Here's a website where you can do a bit of 'comparison shopping' - copy + paste PetInsuranceReview.com into your browser.
