Home Renovation

Making Your Home Renovation Project Easier
Making the decision to renovate or remodel your home can be daunting. It's overwhelming when you consider the alterations that need to be made, the types of materials that will be required, any permits that are necessary, and the job itself. You may have no idea where to begin. Before you become frustrated, take a deep breath and organize your thoughts. Then you can put a plan in motion.

Know Exactly What You Would Like to See in Your Living Space
Look in home improvement magazines and consider features that you admire in the homes of others. Walk through your home and make a list of any changes that you would like to see. Consider if you need a larger bathroom, want to modify an existing room, or think it's time to add a deck on to the house. Take out a wall, transform your basement into an entertainment room, or take the time to make your home office happen. Once you know what you want, you can move forward with getting the job done.

Find the Best Contractor for the Job
You need to find a company that you can rely on for excellence. You want a contractor who is reputable and skilled in the types of improvements that you need. You also need to consider financial concerns. You want someone to do the job well at a price you can afford.

Don't Choose the First Option
You have many choices when looking for a contractor. Whether you look online, refer to friends, or turn to a network with qualified companies, you should consider all of your alternatives. Get several bids and research the background of the companies before you sign a contract. Find out more now about a preferred network of eligible contractors that is participating in your area. You can simplify your life by describing what type of work you want completed on an online form, as well as the budget that you have available for your project. Interested contractors who are in your geographic location will reach out to you, come at a time that is convenient to you, and assess your home in order to provide you with a quote.

French film "La Ronde" to be screened February 12, 2016 in Albany, NY

La Ronde (the original German name is Reigen) is a play written in 1897 by Arthur Schnitzler, first printed in 1900 for his friends. In 1903, the first German-language edition was published in Vienna, selling some 40,000 copies, but was banned by the censors a year later.

The title means "the round-dance" as in "ring around the rosie," and tells a series of stories about love affairs or illicit meetings involving a prostitute, a soldier, a chambermaid, her employer's son, a married woman, her husband, a young girl, a poet, an actress and a count. At the end of each encounter, one of the partners forms a liaison with another person, etc. By choosing characters across all levels of society, the play offers social commentary on how sexual contact transgresses boundaries of class.

The motion picture LA RONDE (France, 1950, 97 minutes, b/w, in French with English subtitles, directed by Max Ophüls) will be shown on Friday, February 12, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. in Page Hall, 135 Western Avenue, on the University at Albany's downtown campus. Sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute as part of its Spring 2016 Classic Film Series, the screening is free and open to the public.

Personal Branding

I hope this article finds you refreshed in spirit and ready to tackle the New Year! The start of 2016 offers an appropriate opportunity to reflect on where we are, and more importantly, the path we are taking to prepare for our future.

Much ado is being made regarding "Personal Branding Trends For 2016." There's a lot of advice out there but it's not all good.

There is an overemphasis on apps and social networks. Frankly, even if you were able to apply all of the suggestions that are being put forth, you would, in the end, be quite exhausted and likely very discouraged as well.

So, let's do this right! Whether you are an aspiring artist, an e-Marketeer or an auto mechanic, a splash of style that others will recognize is the key to building your personal brand. It could be as simple as a color scheme or as complex as a lifestyle. You want to share your unique-ness while keeping yourself unique. For the start of 2015 my personal "poster girl" as an example of personal branding was a wonderful young lady named Paloma Elsesser. She was pictured as a sort of suggestion to readers to futher investigate who she is and what she does. The ones among you who did that were able to follow her through the year and to the point where she has come as of January 2016, know the deal.

Things don't always move as fast as we might like. But when they do - avalanche! Lovely Paloma is popular, she is influential. Don't worry or care about how rich or famous she is or isn't. The point, the lesson, the mark is that she is "out there." The right people either know who she is or they are hearing about her. She is original, unique, perfectly positioned for better things to happen. Whether they will or not is up to fate, be it the kindness and interest of another person, the hand of God, or the self-determination to grow and thrive.

Now, you really want to build your personal brand? For 2016 I'll use as examples two other "pretty people." Both these folks are larger than life. Don't let that scare you. Google Gigi Hadid. Google Karl Lagerfeld. Read their bios. Check out the history behind the scenes of their respective careers. Then come back here.

Now that you're back, how do you feel? Impressed? Intimidated? Inspired? What do Gigi and Karl have? (Besides fame and fortune and a connection to the fashion iindustry.) If your answer is "unique style" you are 100% correct. That "style" in itself is the key to each person's "brand," yours and mine! What sticks in your mind after checking out these two individuals? That is the effect YOU want to have on others. YOU want people to remember you, with distinction. An attribute, a look, a trademark or logo of some sort. That is the backbone of a personal brand. Not how many apps you can connect with one another. If you have no brand and are essentially no one, sooner or later that persona is going to become apparent - transparent to others. What are your interests? What is special about you that you "show off" to others? Find that, and you have the cornerstone of a "life foundation."

Engage the media. Let those whose job it is to find and spread news know about YOU. Now, you could issue a hundred press releases via email and none will blip on anyone else's radar. But there is always that one chance, that one instance, that one person who may take note and notice, and then BAM! ConsiderGi gi and Karl or another leader or role model and look at how they are presented to the world. Don't be a copycat, but DO BE AN INNOVATOR! Introspect yourself. Then put your uniqueness, your "keywords' out there.

Watch the trends. Where are the winners hanging out? If those you want to connect with are all on facebook, that's your destination. Hop aboard twitter, Instagram, WeChat, Weibo and KiK. Once you sign up on one of these social conduits, you don't have to be posting every minute. I signed up for twitter very early on and didn't use it to full potential until blogs started tanking a bit. The great thing was, I already had my "twitter handle" - having "reserved" it long ago!

Be ready. I've been on LinkedIn forever. I have thousands of connections, but rarely use the 275-million member service. I once signed on to a couple of "groups" but quickly left after discovering they mostly were being used as a kind of spam, promoting junk ideas or marketing products. But I'm a "member" and may find LinkedIn useful in the future. Should that happen, should I need to perform a bit of "networking," my account is more than ready to roll!

What's next? Go back and re-read the personal branding article I posted last year. It's still valid and I sincerely hope it helps YOU!

Define Conservative

Types of Political Conservatives

The American news media like to use simple labels to describe the political philosophy of voters, usually grouping them under three broad categories: Liberal, Moderate and Conservative. However, within each category there are actually sub-groups that are distinctly different from one another. For example, some Liberals may have a positive view of socialism, others do not. Some moderates lean more toward liberal views than conservative ones. Within the group that is generally described as Conservatives, there are actually several distinct subgroups:

Cultural Conservatives

This group is also sometimes referred to as "the religious right" or "social conservatives" These are voters who put their personal religious faith, usually Christian, foremost in choosing which candidates to endorse. They are not much concerned about the separation of church and state, instead stressing the promotion of traditional values.

Fiscal Conservatives

These Conservatives put fiscal responsibility ahead of cultural issues. They are primarily concerned with the problems posed by the national debt and what they see as excessive government intrusion into the marketplace. Many Libertarians fall under the category of fiscal conservatives.

Neo Conservatives

These voters tend to favor a pro-American and pro-Israeli foreign policy, tax cuts and promoting greater efficiency in delivering social services rather than abolishing them. They reached their political peak during the administration of President George W. Bush, whose foreign policy advisers had a strong neo conservative outlook. Writer and TV commentator Irving Kristol is perhaps the most influential neo conservative.

Paleoconservative

These are old school Conservatives in the mold of the late William F. Buckley. They stress family values, traditional morality and a restrained U.S. foreign policy. They are often referred to as "establishment conservatives" and represent the mainstream views of many "Wall Street" and "country club" Republicans.

Clickbait Conservatives

These voter's conservatism is based upon key hot button issues such as immigration or abortion, but who are not necessarily tied to any unified conservative philosophy. They can be mobilized to vote if they see one of their pet issues trending strongly in the media, especially online social media, but are not otherwise drawn to political activism. Their critics sometimes refer to them as "low-information voters."

The Big Tent

Believe it or not, these groups of Conservatives can be further broken down into still smaller subgroups. This diversity within the conservative movement is why Republicans are sometimes referred to as "the party of the big tent."

The Twitter End

The beginning of the end of twitter?

It's a lesson Google never learned. "If it ain't broke don't fix it. ". For whatever reason, the powers behind twitter are about to venture off a steep cliff.

300 Million twitterers are about to get a cold, hard, slap in the face. Soon, they'll be subjected to never-ending self-absorbed musings. Nobody will read 10,000 word tweets. That's Facebook territory! Followers will drop like flies. And I, a heavy twitter user, want NO PART of it!

READ: Twitter soon to jump the shark. Fad will end.

I'm wondering if @WeChatApp will take over once twitter jumps the shark. Looks like everyone will be moving to something... Instagram may get a boost from this. I personally recommend WeChat.
