Computer Tech support scam is back in Upstate New York

Buffalo, NY (September 30, 2016)-- Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York’s Scam Tracker is receiving reports again of scammers pretending to offer tech support to unsuspecting users.
There are three types of tech support scams. The first is a phone call from a “specialist” at a computer company. The second type is a pop up on your computer, wanting you to call a number to fix the “problem” your computer has. Ransomware is the third type. These programs lock your computer and demand payment to release your files. Be careful not to give in to this request. You could be a target again because the scammers know they have someone who will do what they say.

The Case Of JonBenét Ramsey

After two decades, the unsolved murder mystery of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey — which left many transfixed — reawakens via CBS’ new miniseries: The Case of: JonBenet Ramsey

Back in the late 90s I met a gentleman by the name of Lance Matthews who told me a fascinating story about time he served in a Colorado jail, and his cellmate, J.T. Colfax, a performance artist who made off with a page from the morgue containing information relating to the JonBenet Ramsey Murder Case.

Matthews stayed in touch with J.T. Colfax, created a web site of Colfax's art work, case documents, and correspondence. Matthews acted as his messenger, advocate and mouthpiece on several Ramsey case discussion forums.

At the time I was doing a cutting-edge overnight talk radio show based in Albany, New York, streamed over the Net. I also conducted IRC chats and accepted faxes and phone calls from listeners all over the world! My radio shows on the Ramsey case ran from November 11, 1998 through May 1, 1999.

The radio shows were recorded live off the Internet by ACandyRose and were converted to RealAudio where they were put on the the Webdollie Real Audio web site owned and operated by ACandyRose.  Several sites also produced transcripts of the programs. Matthews used the Webdollie web site URL as part of his hard copy promotional advertising of the radio shows but would not admit until months later that the web site was created and owned by ACandyRose. Matthews comments to ACandyRose on May 8, 1999 as to why he never gave her credit for her work: "I also thought if I credited you that some people would allow there bias and prejudice to stand in the way of reading and hearing the wonderful job you did on the RA and transcriptions."

As a reporter interested in the case (and a talk radio host looking for a strong topic off the beaten talkshow path), meeting Lance was like having manna fall from heaven. Over the course of several months Lance was able to contact and invite most of the key players and investigators of the case to be guests on my program. Lance was the greatest radio talk show producer who ever lived, IMHO! But, the series eventually ended, and, in that end, there was only speculation, with just a sliver of hope. Fast Forward to 2016!

CDTA Bus Incident Yet To Reach End Of The Line

BREAKING ::: The Albany County DA's office has announced that the tentative trial date for the UAlbany/CDTA bus case has been adjourned. As of now, the next formal appearance date for Asha Burwell and Ariel Agudio will be a pre-trial hearing on October 11th.

A decision to dismiss from the university one of the three women accused of making false allegations of a racially motivated attack must be overturned, the woman’s attorney argues in a recent court filing. Steven Cook reports in the Daily Gazette Ariel C. Agudio filed a petition in state Supreme Court in Albany County earlier this month calling her dismissal from the University at Albany improper and the product of an unfair school proceeding.

The nice thing about having the Internet is that you can cut to the chase in articles like this I can just tell you to Google "CDTA racial incident" and you'll find just about everything you need to know about what happened in January 2016 in upstate New York (that some say "even fooled presidential candidate Hillary Clinton").  Investigators and local black community leaders who viewed bus video couldn't find a drop of evidence the three students were victims of any kind of crime. In fact, police say the women were the actual aggressors, that they physically attacked other students on the bus.

One of the three young ladies involved (Alexis Briggs, her mother walking up the courtroom stairs in the photo appearing on this website) apparently was unable to maintain her stance:  she admitted her guilt.  [Briggs admitted to a reduced charge: disorderly conduct, and was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service. She waived her right to appeal, and avoids any criminal conviction.  Her attorney William Little:  "You know she's very pleased to put this entire matter behind us. Given the way things can go with trials, there's always a risk. And she's being offered a non-criminal offense violation. She definitely has a bright future ahead of her, she's a very smart young woman."]

Briggs has already faded from public memory. The other two, Asha Burwell and Arielle Agudio, decided to go to trial.   I wondered if they had been as active on social media now as they were when they were initially publicizing the bus attack (which some say even forced the UAlbany president to accept a position at another college far away. Like Mrs. Clinton, he came out swinging "for the girls." There was damage to UAlbany's reputation as well, and it has been suggested that several  students who were college-shopping immediately struck UAlbany from their lists.)  There are times in life when one must maintain a low profile and at least for Asha Burwell this was one of those times: she blocked all of her perceived enemies (unfriendly forces if you will) on social media but even blocking them can't stop them from looking at her accounts through other accounts or just on the plain old Internet, where she maintained a low level of activity on Facebook.  Unfortunately, Burwell, partly due to her brother's notoriety in the sports world, has become the one from the triad most-identified with the CDTA incident, which, in effect, may end up her personal albatross.

Agudio on the other hand, has stayed active on twitter. As of matter of fact, a few of her tweets arrived one day in a little chain, seeming to reveal that she is wondering what kind of life-path she is on, perhaps a measure of soul-searching? Screenshots after the jump.

Dave Lucas’ Food Diary Will Change The Way You Eat

Yum-yum! BBQ breakfast Bacon & Pancakes!
My personal food philosophy embraces the 80/20 rule, 80 per cent of the time I stick to my diet, and 20 per cent of the time I don't. It keeps life balanced. Lunch at a Roy Rogers is not taboo.

Breakfast

My typical breakfast includes a dollop or two of nut butter. Cashew, Peanut, Almond... add to that a Pan de Sol roll or a slice of  Pepperidge Farm or Arnold multi-grain bread. Of course on weekends, I BBQ pancakes, weather permitting. Yes, I have a pancake problem. But not the guilt some would associate with it.

Lunch

Since I was a teenager, I've skipped lunch (or eaten super-lite) - a cup of tea or coffee and a bit of fruit keeps me going and glowing.

Dinner

Dinner is usually salad and/or pasta and/or pizza, sometimes Chicken Parm, sometimes Beef Goulash, sometime Spaghetti and Meatballs. Fresh corn is nice in the summertime, along with fresh veggies from my garden.

Beverages

I drink coffee multiple times a day, every day. I also drink a ton of water.

Supplements

I take a multi-vitamin. I chose one that has a combination of components most suited to my particular lifestyle. On days that I work out, I add B-12 and L'Arginine. If I go off-course and eat something like a Nathan's Hot Dog at dinner, I'll take a couple of  Krell Fish Oil capsules with the meal and later on two tabs of Niacin before bed.

Indulgences

I like Stewart’s Ice Cream. Matter of fact, I have a bowl after every trip to the gym. I add a healthy helping of Miralax and three teaspoons of Milo, and mix it up so it's still thick and creamy, but smooth.

Adult beverage of choice

Port wine. Those concord grapes are soooo good for you (I always have them on and when they are in season, during a very short time in the fall.) In the winter when it's really cold, a little brandy, Kahlua in summer, Bailey's Irish Creme in the spring.Does this make me a 'seasonal drinker?' Hmmm...

Friday: Dr. Ibram Kendi Event, History of Racism

The UAlbany English Department invites you to a free event featuring Dr. Ibram X. Kendi.  On Friday (9/9) at 12 pm, Dr. Kendi will present a talk based on his sweeping history and analysis of "racist ideas" in America.  His new book, Stamped from the Beginning, represents a significant contribution to scholarly discourse on race, and it has been positively reviewed by major publications and prominent scholars.  The Washington Post calls it "engrossing and relentless."

12PM, Standish Room, Science Library, University at Albany Uptown Campus 1400 Washington Ave., Albany, NY  12222

 "ENGROSSING AND RELENTLESS"—The Washington Post
"AMBITIOUS, MAGISTERIAL" —Starred Kirkus Review
"MUST FOR SERIOUS READERS" —Library Journal
"HEAVILY RESEARCHED YET READABLE" —Booklist

Some Americans cling desperately to the myth that we are living in a post-racial society, that the election of the first Black president spelled the doom of racism. In fact, racist thought is alive and well in America--more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. And as award-winning historian Ibram X. Kendi argues in Stamped from the Beginning, if we have any hope of grappling with this stark reality, we must first understand how racist ideas were developed, disseminated, and enshrined in American society.

Dale Yeager: Patsy killed JonBenét Ramsey because she was "losing control of her daughter"

The following is a transcript from WROW Radio, The Dave Lucas Radio Show, Albany, NY, January 30, 1999

DAVE LUCAS: On line we have Dale Yeager, the executive director of SERAPH. Hello Mr. Yeager. Welcome to the program.
DALE YEAGER: Hi, how are you?
DAVE LUCAS: Very Good. Mr. Yeager has been involved in the training of law enforcement officers in "less than lethal" tactics for more than ten years. He's a trained criminal analyst who's consulted on more than 130 criminal cases - including the murder investigation of JonBenét Ramsey. Now, you were hired by the Boulder Police Department. Tell us about that.
DALE YEAGER: I was hired by the district attorney’s office to work with the investigative team. Originally we were asked to do an analysis of the ransom note and then in the spring of last year we were asked to write a psychological profile on Patsy Ramsey.
Excuse me for being bold but I've been sitting here listening to this now for three hours. I am one of the few people, my team of people are one of the few people that actually worked on this case. We are not reading things in the newspaper, we are not getting things off of CNN. I had information to do my work that none of these guests had -- and these theories are just... I'm blown away by this.
DAVE LUCAS: There are some ???? theories aren't they?
DALE YEAGER: You know there's a lot of "wanna be experts" out there and it really disgusts me that this case has become a magnet would like to theorize in an area they have no right to be in. I have done this for 10 years. I've worked on cases like this before and some of these theories have no basis in reality. I think that your listeners need to understand that there's significant, some significant issues here that need to be dealt with and some issues here that affect our society as a whole and I just think that needs to be brought out.
DAVE LUCAS: Well, who killed JonBenét Ramsey?
