Meet Julissa Arce, "The New Americans," 9/29

Meet Julissa Arce who emigrated from Mexico at age 11, rose to prominence as a powerful executive on Wall St., and made international headlines when she revealed that she was an undocumented immigrant. She will speak about her life at the inaugural Albany Book Festival.

Now an advocate for immigration reform, Julissa is the author of the national bestseller, My (Underground) American Dream, and the new young adult memoir, Someone Like Me. She was named one of People en Español’s “25 Most Powerful Women of 2017.” 

Her memoir is currently being adapted as a TV series by 20th Century Fox Television, with actor and producer America Ferrera.

Book festival events will take place from 10AM to 4PM throughout the Campus Center on the University at Albany Uptown Campus, 1400 Washington Ave.
All events are FREE and open to the public. Free parking will be available in the Dutch Quad parking lots. Food vendors will be open for business.

The festival opens with an all-ages dance party at 10AM, focusing on health and fitness, and hosted by internationally famous dance party organizer Radha Agrawal, author of the new book, BELONG:  FIND YOUR PEOPLE, CREATE COMMUNITY & LIVE A MORE CONNECTED LIFE

Arce will appear on a “New American” memoir panel moderated by noted memoir coach Marion Roach Smith. The panel begins at 2:45, but authors will be available for conversation and signing throughout the day.
Other members of the panel include:
Maeve Higgins, New York-based Irish comedian, co-host of Star Talk with Neil deGrasse Tyson, and author of the new book, Maeve in America.
Abdi Nor Iftin, Somali refugee, “secret broadcaster” of NPR’s “Messages from Mogadishu,” and author of the new memoir, Call Me American.
Khizr Khan, Gold Star father, 2016 Democratic Convention speaker, spokesman for Muslim-American rights, and author of An American Family: A Memoir of Hope and Sacrifice.
