Fixing Windows 98 TimeZones for the New 2007 Daylight Saving Time Rules

Tags: , , ,

I've always thought that Win98SE (which I use on two of my computers) was a very stealthy program. This post by Solprovider pretty much confirms that:
I still think Windows 98 is the best operating system from Microsoft so this article explains how to fix the rules for Windows 98's time zones with the new 2007 Daylight Saving Rules. The fix is very easy, These rules are from Microsoft. I just changed the format so they work with Windows 98. Since Congress reserved the right to change the rules for time zones back to the rules as they were since 1986 if no energy savings are noticed or the public complains, I also provide a method to return to the old rules.

To change to the new 2007 Daylight Saving Rules for Time Zones for Windows 98:
Download New Time Zones
Double-click the file to run it. Click OK twice (on two messages about the registry.) Double-click the time (usually in lower right corner of your screen.) The clock will appear. Change the time zone if necessary.

To change to the old 2006 Daylight Saving Rules for Time Zones for Windows 98:
Download Old Time Zones
Double-click the file to run it. Click OK twice (on two messages about the registry.) Double-click the time (usually in lower right corner of your screen.) The clock will appear. Change the time zone if necessary.

This could be a great conspiracy theory. Microsoft stops supporting Windows 98, and the President of the United States announces the first change to the rules for Daylight Savings Time in 20 years. This is the first time a change in the rules that has affected personal computers in the United States. Because Windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft, many people think they need to upgrade for their computer's clock to work correctly. The above fix required about ten minutes of work to create and test.

  1. I tried the fix for DST changes. It doesn't seem to work. Any ideas?

  2. Haven't had much luck with Windows 98SE. In Windows 95 all I have to do is change the registry and reboot. If I don't reboot it still uses the old dates. Maybe it requires a reboot after a normal shutdown, and I can't get Windows 98SE to shut down normally.

  3. Don't we also need to change start of Std and start of DST inthe registry?
