Credibility SUNsets

Tags: , , , ,

"The more one learns about this case, the less justifiable the four-month-long national media blackout becomes. One could devote entire three-hour blocks of cable news time exclusively to this story, without ever having to use the endless loops or even partial repeat passages on which cable news relies for filler with big stories, while enjoying blockbuster ratings. How did the media suddenly develop an allergy to making money?" - Nicholas Stix

On 22 May, John Leo in the New York Sun knocked the mainstream press while singling out bloggers based on ethnic makeup ("...let's notice that the blogger assault on the press's failure in the Knoxville case is being led by Michelle Malkin, who is Asian-American, and LaShawn Barber, who is black.") and crediting those bloggers without crediting the reporter who did the actual legwork and broke the story.

I wrote to the Sun twice, once with links to my post reproduced below, once without. There was no response and they chose not to post my comments!

So, they're censoring responses to an article on media censorship! I hope they're taking their irony supplements. - Nicholas Stix:

There’s a TV scriptwriter named David Mills who goes by the moniker “Undercover Black Man” on the Web. Mills is also the guy who secretly got Lawrence Auster sacked at Front Page Magazine last year by sending a long letter to editor/publisher David Horowitz, charging Auster with racism. Mills recently posted his anti-Auster letter

In response to my Knoxville Horror articles citing the black supremacist Web site, “Svengali Media,” Mills wrote that he thinks Svengali is a race hoax perpetrated by a white supremacist. Someone at Svengali turned out to be a fan of mine, and set up a blog page devoted to Mills and me! I suppose Mills will claim that’s a hoax, too.

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
