Another Week In The Bucket...

[Writing this on the way back to Albany from Manhattan] - Looking forward to getting home and going for a nice long bike ride! I had a very very busy but very productive week at work. I thought it might be difficult to get back in my groove after a week's vacation, but I was into it the first minute I was back at my desk! I wish everyone could have a job they love...

During the Olympics PBS is airing several documentaries with China as the topic. I was shocked to hear that the average middle-class family income is approx. US $2200 a year! On my salary, over there I would live like a king!

One of the most striking TV documentaries I've watched was one about high school students working hard in their Senior year to prepare for college entrance exams (and for what would set the tone for the rest of their lives). Although the Chinese education system seems harsh, and the kids all wanted to know what High School is like for their American counterparts (no doubt after sseing "High School Musical" on the Net). But the amazing thing is that even after they knew what American High is like and they endured a very grueling Senior year, all agreed they would want nothing less than the same education for their own kids someday.

The program made me think how much I wish I could have been involved in a program like the Chinese have today when I was back there in High School! I think I could have been so much farther ahead today. Oh well, as the saying goes: better to light one candle than to curse the darkness! I see kids today fooling around, wasting thier educational opportunities in High School, but there is no way to make them understand how mcuh they might regret it later!

Payable by either clicking the BitCoin "tip me" button or the PayPal "donate" button in the sidebar.

WAIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO COMMENT?
Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

I NEED TO BE HEARD! BUT I DONT WANT TO PAY.
Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
