Changing With The Times

I've decided time has come to make some changes in the way I interact with the Net. First of all, I needed a good reader to keep up with the many blogs I follow. I activated Google Reader, and got a bit sidetracked investigating all of the wonderful "accessory" programs Google offers. If you are on blog*spot, you should have a gmail account and avail yourself of all the tools and toys Google gives!

Google Reader is okay, but I needed something better, something with a smaller footprint. I found it in a little program called NFReader. It totally does the job. Jump on your favourite search engine and download it! I believe you can run it off a keychain USB drive, which I am doing with a contact / e-mail program called Kurlo. That's another one I recommend you grab!

Within this blog I have added a few sidebar features (widgets) including one that allows me to add a link directly from Google. I can share a link to an article with you and not have to go to the trouble of opening up the blogger dashboard!

Then there's Twitter! I've posted quite a bit about Twitter recently, and just signed on so that I can use my mobile phone to send Tweets to my "followers." I won't be sending any junk: promise!

Then there's MySpace and FaceBook. I've found MySpace very helpful and useful, but I have yet to make good use of FaceBook, at least for right now. If anybody out there has any FaceBook tips, I'd love to hear from you!

Do you have any problems with your blog? Do you get frustrated wondering if people are reading it, responding to it, etc.? Don't worry. Just keep it going. Some "seeds" don't sprout right away. Watch what other bloggers are doing. Add a few features and use a service like autopinger.com to let the search engines know what you're up to. Sometimes something may seem like it's not working. An advertising widget, perhaps. Just leave it there... it may take months but all you need is for the right netizen to land on your blog and success will be yours!

I've been tempted to drop the so-called "aggregator" posts like "Around the Blogosphere," but I've gotten a lot of good feedback from those posts, and quite frankly, I've been sticking in links that I intend to return to and explore in more detail. So I'll keep posting them, at least a few times a week!

What do you think about adding a C-box? I've held out only because I know that C-box adds loading time for people visiting via dial-up ... and yes, there are many many netizens still using dial-up. I try to keep this weblog "dial-up friendly."

So that's it for now: I'm going to settle down and watch the Olympics on TV. Y'all come back now, y'hear?

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
